Experimenting With Exhaust Discs

OK, for starters I don't have a Youtube account Edit I do now

I had a friend help with these and it is the first time I heard the car from outside of it. I never realized how loud it really is with no discs in it.

With the 1/2 it sounds good and you can really here the motor. The 3/4 I really like a lot, good mix of exhaust sounds and motor sound. The 7/8 is starting to get back to no discs at all but still dialed back. I left the 7/8 for now because the 7/8 discs came out the best and I want to run it more to get a better feel.

In any case the 3/4 may be where I end up, as I said a real nice mix there. The vids are a bit rough, I did not do any editing and you may need to hear them a few times before you really hear a difference. If someone feels like putting them on Youtube, that is fine.

Also, this is running with pure gas (not E10 crap) at 90 octane. I don't know if it is my imagination but with pure gas it seems a lot more responsive and the sounds is better, a lower pitch sound.

Thanks for the vids. Makes it crystal clear to me how the discs are coming out before I even start the car up at the dealership I've gotta abuse this whole being in my 20s thing while I still can

The expression goes "if it's too load you're too old". What the heck happened to me? I run the discs out and love the sound. Wife says I'm 61 going on 19.

I tried to play with these vids and convert them to other formats but the camera recorded in mono. So these are not the best to go by as I said you can get a better feel by hearing them a few times.

I am getting older but still not that old, my thoughts on dialing it back comes down to this

Attracting police attention

same for the neighbors

making it sound good not just loud

and basically not annoying people on the road.

I was glad to hear it by standing next to the street while my friend passed. It is one thing inside the car, wide open sounds great inside - not so much outside. If I was at a light and a Boss pulled away aggressively next to me, it would annoy me. Again inside the sound is great but...

However mostly it came down to trying to find a good sound for me. I think wide open takes away from the Boss (I guess the engineers know what they are doing by even putting discs in there to begin with). Right around 3/4 really lets you hear the engine along with the exhaust and that sounds bad ***. At that point I even went a tad bigger to 7/8.

Hey to each his own, that is what makes the world go round but I think for some if you give it time you find wide open and the loudest exhaust is not always best, the Boss sings in other ways too and drowning out the motor noise is kind of a shame.

These are all my opinion and I mean no disrespect to others that like it different.

+1
I totally agree with you.

I currently running her with 1/2" holes in the disks. 3/4 sounds nice but I don't want to drill it out and have the wife say it's too loud and not able to go back.

I am running it now at 7/8. I did not have a hole cutter for 3/4 and YellowBoss said he was running that.

YellowBoss: Are you still at 7/8?

I ran it for a week wide open. It seemed too loud and I noticed after a long drive I had hearing issues...the drone and highway noise started up the dull roar in my ears that I used to get playing bass in bands too loud.

It seems more mellow and has a growl instead of a constant popping. Less glass pack sounding and more mod motor growl if that makes sense.

Funny thing is after going around the block the car stunk like clogged cats (rotten eggs). Only thing I can figure on that is stale water etc. in the mufflers since it was spewing a bit of moister and probably they were not getting good and hot with the side pipes wide open.

I hope 7/8 is going to be good, I don't want to make new discs LOL.

Thanks Scott, I really like the sound wide open with no discs, especially when decelerating. I am considering drilling the discs and based on your experiment will go with 3/4 - thanks for doing the research!

I still have the 7/8 in but like I said the 3/4 is a great mix. Running the 7/8 now since they came out the best. I have some stainless steel sheets and need to cut them, just been busy on other things. That deceleration really does not sound good to me wide open, my opinion but I don't want the Boss sounding like a semi. When I get all done I will most likely run 3/4 but cut another 7/8 just to have.

I have no smell with it, may be water in yours. It has been very dry here for months and the car is inside anyway. I am planning to drill a small hole in the bottom to allow water to pass out, several cars were delivered that owners reported water stuck there.

Hi Scott,
Nice Job, Thanks for doing this so we don't have to.
Have you considered making one of the mounting holes slotted horizontally so that you only need to remove one screw and just loosen the second?
I think I'm torn between 1/2 and 3/4. 3/4 starts to get a little pop in the exhaust that I'm not sure I like. I can say full open will be the way I run on track but for the street I may do 1/2.
Again nice job on the vids, really helps those of us who do not yet have our cars.
Regards,
Dave

I may try 10/16, when my car arrives.

I just up my from 1/2 to 5/8" I think I'll stop there. It sounds good without being to loud.
