Just because the stock ECU can rev past 7800 doesn't mean that you want to be pushing it (the ECU) that hard. There's probably a good reason why the RPM limit is not determined by the motor.

There IS a reason, and it's spelled "warranty".

 

I've heard that it was limited to make sure the engine would last 100,000+ miles. Rev it as high as the race teams but don't expect it to last as long.

 

I wasn't talking about the mechanical parts.

 

How are you going to do damage to the ECU by revving it higher?

 

That's not what I am saying. I am suggesting that maybe it is possible for the ECU to damage the engine by revving it higher. Has anyone asked the race teams why they aren't going to 8400 if the car is supposedly capable of doing so? If they feel that 8400 RPM is too fast in terms of engine mechanicals, that the engine isn't going to last more than a few races at 8400 RPM, then I would have thought the red line for the street car would be even lower than it is. 900 RPM is not much of a margin in that respect.

 

The comment was there is a big difference in stress and wear going above 7,500 up to 8,300. That's a lot of rotating mass moving at a very high speed. While Ferrari's and others do it I don't think they are worried about making it to 100,000 miles and/or they use higher quality parts. Note the price difference in the cars... Same applies to revving a 5 DOT 0 vs a Boss 302.

For anyone with a Boss are they rev limited at 7500 or 7800?

Were are you getting the 7800rpm from? Road & Track? That article had a lot of miss information.

 

My current Cammer 5.0 in my 2001 Cobra will go past 8000 very easy. Been past that several times. I reset the rev limiter after that. It is still pulling like mad at that range also, I would try to do 7600 to 7700 for the shifts. From what I have heard is that the new one pulls stronger on the top end and the one I currently have is a little stronger in the midrange. The ECU (2001 Cobra) runs just fine higher up, but the programming is limited as you must set it for the top set of numbers at the last rpm break point and the numbers set for the tune carry on up from there. At least that is my impressions from using the SCT tuning. I am hearing the ECU in the Boss is far better also.

Me too, hit it a few times looks like 7500 but it is hard to tell as I want to keep the eyes on the road at that point.

 

Rev limiter is set at 7500; I've hit it a few times seating the rings.

 

I think the higher rev limit will come with the trackey

 

 

I hope so but I'm not optimistic. I'd also like the 155 speed limiter removed. I'm planning to do the Mojave Mile this fall.

That's what I thought. Of couple of the magazines mentioned 7800 but I didn't think that was correct. So how does it sound at 7500?

 

What's the speed rating on the stock tires? The speed limiter will always be less that that rating. I'm on my phone or I would look it up.
