Do I have to take the splitter off to install the brake cooling ducts ?

Is it absolutely necessary, or just easier to do the hoses with it off ?

No, you do not have to remove the splitter.

Did the hoses last night. Really a straight forward job, thanks to all the previous posts with pics and tips.

Started at 7:30 pm at my friend's shop, and was done at midnight. Took our time, a few bumps we worked thru, (and a few beers) and got it done, along with an oil change.
