It does have a certain aesthetic appeal. With the white and blue and all. ![Lol](https://themustangsource.com/forums/images/smilies/lol.gif)
Oddly enough the positive terminal is fine. I think that supports the theory that the battery has been leaking and needs to be replaced.

Current flows Neg. to Pos. It's a common misconception the it flows Pos to Neg. The electrons coming out the Neg pole are reacting to the acidic gases in the air gaps between the battery terminal and the pole which causes it to grow the toxic candy. It basically being torn apart at the molecular level and forming a really cool looking floral arrangement. Thats why greasing the terminals keeps them from getting buggered up, no air gaps. You need to make sure they swap your cable out too, and don't buy into the answer that the cable is fine because it's not. You could end up with issues a few years down the road especially if you drive in winter over wet salted roads.

I would also carefully inspect everything below the battery also, since you can see shere it has leaked acid. That acid leaking down could have damaged the parts below the battery like the battery box. Those parts could start corroding over time also if the acid damaged the finish.
Also, I agree that even though Ford didn't make the battery, they are resonsible for it. They didn't make the transmission but every time something happens with it everyone blames Ford, not the company in China that actually did make it.

Just an FYI, regular grease isn't what you should use. There is a compound used for preventing corrosion. Should be able to find it at any electrical store. Chances are, the terminals have some air-gap in them. Once the acid gets on metal, it makes pretty crystals which smell good.

poor quality battery. my motorcraft in my 04 lasted 7-8 years before i finally had to replace it. ive heard a lot of people say their batteries don't last long in their new mustangs...seems like ford should do a better quality control check nowadays or switch who makes their cases

Wouldn't they disconnect a leg from the battery during transport to dealerships? If so, it was probably not tightened properly upon reconnect. If you were to blame something, I would think it would be the delivery process.
So many companies reduce the safety and quality inspections these days. That should have been caught within a dealership inspection once delivered. Another cause might have been that the original battery was removed and used somewhere else and when a replacement battery was installed, it wasn't secured fully.
Such a shame to have something so simple become an issue like this. I think I would be asking for a new battery cable myself. Like stated, I bet that corrosion creeped up the cable inside the covering.

Update: Took it to the dealer today. They replaced the battery under warranty. but did not replace the cable. Claimed Ford wouldn't authorize. Sounds weird to me, so I'll PM Deaysha for advise.
Also asked them to check 2nd gear (clunky). They said the tranny is defective and want me to come back Monday.
Azure: That was my first thought so I checked it, but the clamp was tight. Turned out the battery was leaking acid between the post and case.

I'm sure that now that it turned out the problem was a defective battery leaking acid, and not me being lazy and not doing proper maintenance, those posters will apologize. Yep, they'll post their apologies any minute now.... any minute now...
