I am the guy with the LS where I ran the car for 2300 miles, easy break in period, had it 2 quarts low and then at a track event over 2 days I used 8 more quarts in 200 track miles. I had it to the dealer on Saturday and had the oil changed. I kept the filter and a sample of the oil. I will drive it and see how the consumption is pending information from Deysha at Ford Customer Service.

Update

The latest update is that the engineer thinks it's a problem with the timing chain tensioner. They are making sure the part is available and will be scheduling the service. I hope it's sooner than later, I haven't driven her for over a week and I'm going through withdrawals. My Explorer is a great vehicle with the V8 but it's nothing like the Boss.

I had an '03 Cobra that had two bad chain tensioners, and there was definetly a noise associated with that issue.

It seems you are also experiencing a noise, so a bad tensioner is a possibility.

The thing that has me stumped though is the oil cunsumption. Did the engineer explain the correlation between a bad tensioner and oil consumption?

Keep us posted on the outcome.
Good luck and hope you get your car back soon!

No explanation for the oil consumption was given. My dealer started an oil consumption test earlier that will continue whether the tensioner fixes the problem or not.

I'm still waiting for my dealer to schedule an appointment to get the tensioner replaced. I'll keep y'all updated as progress is made.

My car is finally at the dealership to get the timing chain tensioner replaced. It took so long because nobody in the DFW area had the tools needed to do this so they had to order them from Ford. Then the service manager went out of town for a couple of days and he wanted to be there so he could personally look after the car. Then the mechanic they wanted to do the work was out the next day. So this morning they finally took my car.

There was a nice surprise though. When I asked for a ride back home they said they were giving me a loaner car. I've been going to that location for service for 12 years and this is the first time they have done this. Sure it's only a 2010 focus but it sure beats waiting for a ride to and from the dealership. They did warn me that it didn't have quite as much hp as my car.

I guess having Deysha on your side has it's perks.

As far as oil consumption goes. I haven't driven it as much lately and I've babied it for the most part when I do, but after almost 1k miles it hasn't burned any more oil. Maybe it was just slow in breaking in.

I got my car back from the dealership today. It sounds much better, especially at higher RPMs. And as a bonus I'm getting better gas mileage. I used to struggle to get 14mpg around town, after having driven about 30 miles since I picked it up I'm getting over 17mpg around town. I don't know if it is all from replacing the tensioner but something has freed up the engine.

Like I said before they treated me like royalty and went out of their way to make sure my car was done right.

This has me stumped as well. The tensioner might explain the metal scraping noise but not the oil consumption. I mean, where was the oil going? But it also smelled of burnt oil so it was ending up somewhere it shouldn't have. The new tensioner should also free up some HP too. Glad that Ford looked after you quite well and that all is as it should be now.

The slack in the chain could change the valve timing slightly resulting in the lower fuel economy but it also might change the vacuum conditions and thus suck the oil in via the PCV system. That's the best I can think of.

Well, that does make sense now that you mention it. Perhaps the altered valve timing would also allow too much oil to enter the combustion chamber via valve overlap, but I would imagine the car would be smoking like a chimney going through all that oil, and would be quite visible out of the tailpipes. Your explanation makes more sense and perhaps explains where all that oil is going (and still gummed up in the PCV system). The whole PCV system must be so full of oil that it has to be completely cleaned/flushed out or else the oil smell will be there for a long time to come. Perhaps you have solved the mystery................

Modern cars burn oil pretty invisibly to a point. But it does seem like a lot vanished. It's the best I can think of and the change in timing would be very slight, essentially the play in a single link of chain. I also haven't looked into exactly how the valve timing works in these engines it might be enough to increase the flow rate through the PCV system. It's a guess. If it goes away or gets much better with the tensioner fix then that's why. If it doesn't change then it could be some other problem.

I wouldn't expect much to be gummed up in the PCV system. Not sure why there was an oil smell unless it was from the burning of the oil.
