The Boss yelled at me... but why?
The Boss yelled at me... but why?
Let me start this post with a disclaimer that the events described below took place on a closed course... with a professional driver... in Mexico.
Now that that's out of the way...
I was stretching the legs on the Boss last weekend and had her up to around 125+mph when out of nowhere there was a loud, high pitched tone coming from the dash. Best way I can describe the tone is, think of the door ajar chime, only a solid tone, and louder. This lasted for a good 5 seconds, during which time I hit the top of the RPM range (without bouncing off the limiter) and had even started braking before the tone stopped. I will admit it scared the crap out of me, I thought I was in danger of breaking something, but I didn't get any lights flashing on the dash, no messages on the display, nothing. Just a random noise. I've gone over the scenario in my head time and again over the last few days but can't come up with a reason for the noise.
Anyone else experienced anything like this, or have any ideas what could have caused the tone?

Missile Lock Warning
mine (just a stock 4.6) did it last time down the track from 5-6000 rpm...seriously thought it was a bearing screech, but thats been 1000 miles ago, clean oil filter media/good pressure- so I'm chalking it up to serpentine belt slipping(please) or something. it sounded like it was coming from the dash/extreme left side, but at 80-100 mph with the motor screaming, its kinda hard to say...a lot of sound/wind noise/underhood air pressure/etc to play tricks with your hearing.
Ive spun a bearing before in older iron, sounded eeerily similar to this noise- but always found metal in the filter(anything unusual, I'll take a knife to the filter and look for bad news), and reduced oil pressure. at high rpm, the poor little alternator spins about a bizillion rpm, could even be that. my old camaro serpentine would slip if you hit a puddle, and it made the same screech sound till rpm dropped and belt caught up- sure hope thats all thats up with mine.
just thinking about it, my old marquis had a LOUD buzzing at certain speeeds/rpm, sounded like a electric warning buzzer- here the plastic seal at the cowl would resonate/vibrate against the glass due to vibration/airflow under the hood, like a reed in a horn- I mean it was very loud, as if we had a midget with a tuba under the dash - dont you hate when that happens
it could be possible that theres a similar resonance under the mustangs cowl too? if mine does it again, I might try just putting some electric tape to the plastic/glass like i did on the old merc to silence it/prove out the cause- and ease my 'you spun a bearing' worries...

op how many miles are on the car? I've had mine on the track at high speed several times and i have never heard a noise. some gt owners describe a loud screech that comes form inside the dash. Supposedly its the metal the car is made from giving thanks to god for being part of such an effing awesome ride. Basically the steel molecules are screaming F***K YEA!
seriously though, there are some vids online of a screech from inside the center area of the dash that i have seen around. not sure what it is, from what i heard it sounds to me like the blower motor for the AC system.

Definitely sounded electronically generated, but also sounded like it was coming from the dash. As mentioned above though, there was so much natural noise going on it's hard to pinpoint exactly where it was coming from. Mechanically speaking, the car is fine, I drove another 100 miles that night after the sound and have driven every day this week without further incident. I'm sitting at just over 3k miles now, btw.
Lol at Shane's explanation, I like that!
Of course, I guess it could also be my turbo encabulator spun a bearing!

This happened again last night. There's a rather nice, rather lengthy access road / on ramp heading home from a buddy's house, so I wound her up and let her stretch her legs. Radio and AC off, windows down, the sound came back, but didn't seem as "urgent" as the first time described above. Just to confirm and take note of the specifics, I doubled back around and ran through the gears once more; no radio, AC, windows up, and eased the speedo up instead of blasting towards the limiter. As I suspected, the noise starts right at about 120mph and the volume increases with additional speed. Still sounds electronic, still seems to be coming from the dash area, and still no flashing lights or other warning signs. So I'm still baffled.
I'll try to bring a camera next time to get it on video...
