Evos are absolutely amazing to drive! I've owned 3 Evos ('05, '08, and a paddleshift '10 MR) and they are without a doubt the most razor sharp, exciting cars to drive hard. I've driven several STIs, 911s, C6 Vettes, Elises, etc and nothing is as spectacular to drive through corners in complete control (even when sideways) as an Evo. And that lap time deficit would vanish with better tires and a reflash of the ECU (the current Evos gain an easy 70+whp with just a tune). I will own another one someday.
In saying that, I flippin love my Boss LS! Totally different, not as intuitive, but so damned much fun. Ideally I would keep my Boss and buy another Evo but that's not in the cards right now.

You aren't kidding about the stock Pirellis - on my '12 Boss, those tires were HORRENDOUS until they were super hot. On my '13 LS, the R-comp Pirellis are a different world, even on a 45 degree day that would have had my '12 spinning the tires in 4th.
I love both the Evo and the Boss. If you ever have a chance to drive an Evo, and I mean DRIVE it, you'll understand. They both cater to sort of hard-core, slightly nutty go-fast guys

I thought that Mitsubishi discontinued the EVO? I thought that the whole Lancer line was being discontinued? Either way I think it is incredible to see how well the EVO did against a brand new Boss, the EVO has been a carryover since at least 2010. It's sad to see this car being abandoned, Subaru may follow suit considering that the STI hasn't seen any real changes since 2008.
If I could have my ultimate garage I'd have a Mustang and an EVO or STI

Never owned or driven either car (EVO - WRX) but every magazine I've read always gave the advantage (albeit slight) to the EVO. IMO

The current Evo has been around in basically the same form since 2008 and supposedly '13 is the last model year before a rumored hybrid Evo XI comes out.
As for whether I prefer an STI or an Evo for daily use, I obviously have to say Evo. I used all three of mine as DDs and they are superb. Yes, they are sharp, direct, sort of stiff riding (although back-to-back driving of my P spring equipped LS and my buddy's basically stock '05 Evo showed the Evo to ride better), and they can be loud especially with open pipes. But the Evo X has the best seats (similar to the Boss but even snugger) - the STI seats have very poor lateral support. Plus, the '08+STI has the squishiest, least direct feeling steering that you can imagine.
If you want a rowdy semi-practical DD, the Evo hands down. But if you want a mellower, less aggressive package, go STI. Also check out the amazing little Mazdaspeed3 for even less money. Super little cars to drive.

I owned a 2008 EVO X for a couple years. The car is pretty phenomenal in terms of performance numbers, but I always felt like the car was driving itself and I was just along for the ride. The disconnection I felt with the road took a lot of the driving enjoyment away for me.
If anyone is interested in picking up an EVO I highly recommend getting an VII or IX - the driving character they possess was lost somehow in the later models.

Perhaps it is just me but I think the Subaru has superior build quality compared to the Mitsubishi, at least in the 2008-13 gen cars.
I like both but I think I'd prefer a manual transmission though my biggest gripe with these cars is the SUV like fuel efficiency.
