Another wrecked Boss
Unbelievable bad Luck!
I was at a track day and Had a 20-something boil off his brake fluid in his Cobalt SS, 3 seconds after he gave me the point by. I went into a 90 degree corner and he could not stop. It doesn’t look too bad in the photos. He hit pretty hard direct on the front passenger wheel. The collision totally destroyed the front suspension all the way up into the engine cradle, wrinkled every passenger side panel, destroyed both pass-side rims and I had an instructor in the Pass seat so all the Pass side safety stuff depolyed. My local Ford dealer took strut tower dimensional measurements and said the strut towers had not moved. Most Painfully, I did not purchase track Insurance for this event
So ... I had two very undesireable options. Fix it for $17K and Keep the Big Boss Car payment, (making for a $60K Track car) Sell it wrecked and Eat a $21K Loss and Loose the Big Boss Car payment.

Having just acquired a New wife this summer, and Between us we have 3 in college and a 4th to start next fall, along with the new wife's deep desire to remodel my 20 year old Kitchen, I bit the bullet and sold the Boss to a local Salvage Yard / Collision shop / Used car retailer.
It’s been fully repaired. The owner of the business has a heated pole barn full of collectable cars, a 1993 Cobra R with 10 miles on it etc. He said he will keep the Boss in his heated garage until spring at which time he will put it for sale on his used car lot. I went by to see it repaired, it looked good. Crushingly sad for me! My Lifetime dream car, Gone.
Oh Well, I did not purchase it because it was the ultimate cool Mustang. I got it because it was the most capable Mustang ever built by the Ford Motor Company. I bought it to track it. It sure is a totally awesome track car. I hope there is a lesson learned for those of you who track and don't get track insurance. I thought if I keep my wheels on the track and I did not screw up, I would be OK. NOT So.
Perhaps I will get an opportunity to have a 2012 CO Boss again some time in the future when the Kids are all through College (that would be 2017, OUCH!) Oh Yah, I just got my Boss Owners Package in the mail last week, Very Cool, Especially if I still owned a CO Boss 302!

sorry but that does not look anywhere near 17k in damage. More like 7-8. I've been in the business for years. Fender, Door, Door post work, and r/f suspension poss cradle (highly unlikely) and 6 hrs paint work (max) I might be high on that estimate. I hope yo got several estimates and they tore it down before they gace you the estimate. Sorry for the loss but that seems WAAAAYY high
Wow, sorry to hear that Chris. I'm sure you're not in the mood for wisecracks, too bad others don't get that. Glad you got to enjoy a few track days, and most importantly nobody got hurt. It's one of the risks of this hobby, but so is driving on the street. Get those kids through school and start planning for the next greatest Mustang. The way Ford's going, we're all going to want the new one in a few years anyway.
So sorry to hear of your loss! I bought mine for the exact same reason, the track capability, so I get it. I also agree that the street is more dangerous by far, you were in the right place, with a patch of bad luck. Best of luck with the kids in college. You'll get another dream car, they get better every year.
Thanks for sharing, this sucks, man.

Wow! That is terrible.
Really sorry to hear that man, I can only imagine how sick that must have made you. Hate to see that happen to anyone.
Just curious, why did you not get the track insurance? Do you usually but didn't this one time?

I feel for you. When I stuffed my GT2 @ VIR the only body part that was replaced was the RF fender but it still cost over $16k with paint airbags seat belts etc. It adds up quick.
Now this hit is why I always preach don't take it to the track if you can't afford to leave it at the track. Bossdog did everything right but $$$$ happens it could have been somebody dropping fluids etc. Something to think about.

My father told me Many years ago: "Lifes most valuable lessons will be the most expensive ones". Boy, was he right on that one!

Question about all of this. What about the Cobalt owner? I'm sure legally he has no obligation to pay for anything, but you did everything right. I suppose if I do take the Boss on the track, I'll get insurance for the track. Also, not that this will make you feel better, but how did the Cobalt fare? I hope that guy was EXTREMELY apologetic.
I had something similar happen with my old Nissan Altima, where the suspension was basically ripped out of the car like it looked in the clips from the video. That was close to 10k, so I'm not surprised at the cost for this.
Anyways, very sad to read and see those pictures. Hopefully the 50th anniversary Mustang will be your next. I'm sure many of us would love to have that one as well and will have to make tough decisions on keeping a Boss or getting that.

Sorry bossdog. Perhaps this should prompt a thread on what to do in such an incident and what insurance would cover and won't. When I called my ins, liberty mutual Cali, they said it would be covered as long as I'm not competing or being timed. So I option out of the track timing and use my personal timing. Of course this may all change when an accident occurs, but this is what my agent told me.
In the meantime bossdog, you can go pick up a miata or any other momentum car and work on your driving skills until your next big purchase. And I'm sure there will be much better cars by 2017.

Everyone should call their insurance guy before getting on the track. It would be good to know your local Laws as well. Ohio has a Recreational statute that stated all parties engaged in similar recreational activity accept all risk, Damage, Injury and death. There is no recourse of any kind if everyone is consenting and acting "reasonable" (no negligent behavior).
I suspect we all know deep down once you are on the track, you are on your own. But it is good to know the law in the state you are tracking in, in the event you hurt someone. I have added an umbrella policy, mostly because I have 4 driving teenagers (technically 3, one just turned 21). But the umbrella policy is good for track type activities as well.
Bossdog-this photographer has several good pictures of you running before the Cobalt ruined things for you. You'lll need to go down in the different pages but I know he has several posted.
