Have any of the current Boss owners been able to compare & contrast the differences between the Boss & either '11 or '12 tranny? I did a quick search in the forum and didn't find anything on this topic, I thought it would have been covered already.

I went and checked out a couple of GT-500s yesterday in a dealer showroom, and I was surprised by how notchy the Shelby felt while rowing through the gears. Granted both of the cars I sat in had less than 8 miles on them, so I would suspect the gearbox should 'loosen up' over time with use. Interesting to note that R was up next to 5th instead of on the left beside 1st. Are all Tremecs using this shift pattern?

That also made me wonder if anyone has been able to drive a GT-500 and a Boss/GT? If so, can you describe the similarities, differences, and misc. impressions of each? I realize both the Boss and GT-500 have heavy duty internals to cope with track use and the regular street duty GT should be engineered with smoothness and drive-ability.

If this has already been covered, I'll be glad to check out the thread I couldn't find. Thanks.

I assume the notchy feel was without turning the ignition on and without driving it.

I may be stating the obvious but the GT500 and Boss cars have different transmissions.

GT500 = T6060
Boss = MT82

i have driven all three including the 11 gt500, 11 gt, 11v6, and 12 boss. the boss has shorter throws than the 11 gt but otherwise feels identical. i agree, i thought the shifter on the 11 gt500 was very notchy. i had all of the cars for a week and needed more time to get used to the gt500 shifter. it reminded me a lot of how shifting on an 10 roush 427r with the roush short throw shifter felt.

Tremecs have had R near 5th on the right for quite some time now. I think the 03-04 Cobras were the first production Mustangs to have 6 speeds and that is how they are positioned. Even the early 90s Corvettes and Camaros are like that. Mine is notchy too but mine is an older version of the transmission on the GT500. Keep in mind though that the Tremec is a much stronger unit. My friend who is a Ford mechanic has warned me that the new GT transmissions are much weaker compared to the tremec, some have had warranty issues concerning it.

Have any 2011-12 GT owners here have issues with there 6 speeds?

in my opinion they felt very similar in shift feel, have you driven both?

Yes I have. I agree with Phil's summation and I conceed the '07 and '08 GT500s did feel a bit notchy since I had them both but not to the level of the of the 427R's or the Stage 3's shifters which are one and the same and are notchy on every gear. I've had the '11 GT500 for almost a year and with 3K miles without having or developing any notchy shifting on any gear. If anything, it is the the most precise and firm Ford OE shifter I've had closely followed by the '04 Cobra's and if compared to a '06 GT or a '08 Bullitt they are worlds apart.

Ive never owed new edge or sn95 stangs so i cant speak of those. the 11 gt500 i drove was a well used press vehicle and i had not long before that driven the 427r, they were very similar. I cant rule out either of the cars i was in having some sort of quirk that made them feel more notchy anymore than we can rule out the cars you drive being smoother than the norm. at any rate, the boss is as smooth as the gt and v6 and the gt500 is much more notchy feeling.

Yes, indeed, that's why I mentioned the heavy duty internals of the 2 higher performance cars, as well as noting the Tremec brand. I know the latter is rated for much higher torque. I'm interested in the shifter and clutch feel between the 3.

I believe the Boss and GT share the same MT82 transmission and clutch assembly as I have not read any specs to reflect a difference between the two. It has been Ford's pattern for many years to choose transmissions and clutches based on the corresponding engines' power and torque bands thus the foot pressure required and feel for the different models will be noticeable.

There has never been a good stock shifter in any mustang I've ever owned. Ford makes them on the very safe side. Long throws and soft bushings make a horrible shifter in my opinion. Once the shifter is changed the transmission comes alive.

It is always humorous every time Ford introduces a new Mustang model some prospective owners attempt to trash other models in order to inflate their egos specially when they know very little on the model(s) being critiqued.
