I never expected an ST either. There are too many historical/nostaligic performance models to use, and it would be a bit confusing here as the Fiesta and Focus ST are the top model while a Mustang ST would probably have to be a middle of the road performance model.

For Europe I think they asked so I can see where they are coming from with an ST Mustang which would essentially be a Mustang GT. An ST Mustang might carry more weight across the pond since its established nomenclature.

Well if its recent news, better they get things right than flush a half baked car with crappy crash ratings out on the market. I'd rather Ford get it right rather than allow some buff rag the luxury of reporting on anything other than niggling little details.

"ST," "GT," whatever, a rose by any other name as it goes.
While calling the first tier V8 Stang an "ST" rather than a "GT" might comport better with Ford's desire to bring the Stang more fully into the 21st century, such incomprehensibly radical change, a whole LETTER, would probably send more than a few misty-eyed traditionalist to their day beds with a case of the vapors.
Perhaps the "ST" nomenclature might be reserved for the Egoboost 2.3 in the pipeline as that more modern approach to power and performance might be a better match for the ST name anyway, given Ford's other two Egoboost 4 performance models: the Fieast and Focus STs.

Agreed, ST is perfect for the Focus and Fiesta maybe even the Fusion but isn't necessary for the mustang.

Why not v6 for base, ST for ecoboost I4, and GT for V8? I could see that happening. Put a different grill on the ST and GT and you have enough differentiation, plus the ST cars out there are pretty solid.

I have most often heard ST to stand for street tuner car as in a car that has been modified for greater street performance. Street Tuner is more of an modern term for cars prepared for track days. GT was more of a term for cars with improved handling . GT is nomenclature from late fifties and on for such cars. Today the GT type car has more or less been replaced by the Street Tuner car.
