Mustang III
A BIG What If... Mustang is a brand...Prius is a Brand...they'll have three cars based on that Prius name in the coming years...on another site the next Stang is reported to be called Mustang III internally...stay with me...
When we think of that nomenclature we think 1974 Mustang II...but what if it's following the
1962 Mustang I:
![](https://themustangsource.com/gallery/files/8/8/2/0/0/mustang_1.jpg)
and the 1963 Mustang II Concept:
![](https://themustangsource.com/gallery/files/8/8/2/0/0/1963_ford_mustang_ii_prototype_01.jpg)
So...The Mustang III could be the next Ford Supercar...based on the Mustang I design style...maybe a 2 seater with a EcoBoost 4? they could sell alongside the regular 4 seater Mustang...New Branding for the next 50 Years? I always wondered what a Mustang I could look like updated...same color scheme...
..........just thinkin' outloud...
And if they built the Mustang in Coupe, Convertible, Hatchback, Glass Roof....oh the possibilities!!

I am not in favor of III, IV, or any other. For one, that's a Mark. For another, there's plenty of other title monikers that can be added to a Mustang. Still haven't got the Twister Special, for example, or a completely new one, based on a previous Mustang influence... or current.
But that's me.
But that's me.

I think it's a fun idea, but not as a Mustang.
I think as people start looking for more and more efficient cars, the small sport coupe segment could be something that people will be increasingly interested in. People will still want fun cars with good performance, but the delivery method may have to change.
I could see GM doing well with a new Fiero type car, and Ford doing well with a Miata fighter in the near future....just not with the Mustang name.

Agreed Clino, despite the original Mustang showcar, the Mustang name has come to represent a sporty coupe rather than an actual sports car and I dont think as a brand name it could really hold up on its own.

Hmmm, I'd much rather Ford put all their resources into a Mustang that keeps the current cars DNA strong. So, a pony/muscle car (V6/V8 RWD 2+2) in Coupe, 'vert and glassroof styles. Don't dilute the brand.
There's rumour of a new halo car to replace the GT. Make the in the vein of the GR-1.....2 seat RWD and put the next Mustang SVT engine (TwinForce or Supercharged Coyote) in it.....that being said, I'd still rather Ford put the money for this into the next gen Mustang, too.
Ford do need a new small-ish coupe (as much for us here in Europe) but that needs to be based off either the new Fiesta or Focus.....so FWD with ecoboost 4

I think that a hybrid sports car, or even an option on the Mustang, makes sense eventually. If you get a decently powerful v6 coupled with all the torque that decent electric motors can produce could make a beast of a car. Next generation Lithium ion batteries could keep it light enough to still be pretty nice. If done right, you could easily see great mpg in a car that could perform pretty well. The bragging rights alone would make such an option worth producing.

Seems like I remember hearing rumors and rumblings over the interwebs a while back that Ford eventually wanted to evolve the Mustang into a standalone, Corvette-fighting marque. What Topnotch proposes seems to jibe with this idea somewhat, though frankly I'm not sure it's the right direction to go in. The idea of the "pony" car was that it could be an affordable, sporty, not-quite-sports-car/not-quite-muscle-car for the everyman.

I don't know which of those concepts is worse. The Mach 1 looks like a pimp attacked a Torino and the Mach 2 looks like one of those cheap kit cars built off of a Volkswagen Beatle.
