Mach 1 trademark for next gen Mustang
Just read an article that stated Ford has applied for a trademark patent for the Mach 1, here is part of the article
The trademark application covers a number of goods and services category, but the important takeaway is “land motor vehicles”, suggesting Ford has bigger plans for the name than just selling Mach 1 T-shirts.
Ford's next-generation Mustang will make its word debut in December as a 2015 model year vehicle, but the Mach 1 won't likely show up until the 2017 model year. It remains unknown where Ford will place the Mach 1 within the Mustang lineup, but it will certainly sit atop the GT.
It's also possible that Ford could install the Mach 1 as the range-topping Mustang model. Ford will reportedly kill off the Shelby GT500, which could clear room for the Mach 1 as the new Mustang flagship.
We should learn more about the Mustang Mach 1 over the next few months.
It is from Leftlanenews.com, looks like deja vu!

This is an interesting find if it is indeed true. I think Ford dropped the ball not offering the Mach1 with the 2005-14 generation cars. I personally feel Ford should have made the Mach 1 over the 2008-09 Bullitt (sorry guys) I think it is just a classic Mustang name.
I personally don't see it being a range topping model though. The Mach1, though very cool was never the top dog Mustang. I'd rather see the Mach1 as it was in 2003-04, slotting between the base V8 and the range topping SVT model. I hope they keep that formula. I remember reading somewhere that there is a rumor that the SVT Cobra name would return I wouldn't mind seeing a return of the 2004 Mustang lineup of base model, GT, Mach1 and Cobra!
If Ford makes a new SVT Cobra count me in!

Interesting, though I wish Ford would stop looking backwards so much for model inspiration and look more to the here and now and the future instead. Guess the aging baby-boomers need something to stoke their reminiscence fires. Perhaps it will be more a street/strip oriented model, perhaps a touch retro, for those uncomfortable with the Mustang advancing away from leaf-springs/drum brakes/carbs/pushrods/live axle into the scary present/future.
I hate Mustang Cobra. Always have, always will. It is an illogical combo and was just a way to cash in on the AC Cobra legend. Save the name for a Vette/Viper killer and serve it up simply as the Ford Cobra.

I dont see any problem with keeping the names as long as performance/quality/design etc of the car is moving forward. It's more of a brand recognition thing re-using the names at this point.
I'm glad the shelby marketing stamp is going away, maybe the $$$ premium will too lol. I'd love to see a Mach 1 and SVT Cobra again

Although Grand Sport did work for the Corvette despite being a race car (the original that is).
As for Ford, I don't really have a problem with recycling names, there is some baggage attached to the monikers like the Mach is considered a street/strip car and the Boss a street/track day car and so on which puts Ford in the position of having to carefully orchestrate them to maintain some sense of continuity and avoid damaging the name.
I've said it before but I'm entirely in favor of Mustang having four models; V6 -> GT --> GT350 ---> GT500 with Boss, Mach, Bullitt, Cobra Jet, Cobra (although like Fender I'm much more in favor of using the Cobra name on an honest two seater Corvette and Viper fighter) as special editions that fill the gaps.

R, FTW
another mach 1 would be nice. might be the only incentive i would want to buy a new 15+ model year....
but if i aquire a 2003-04 mach 1 it would make for a nice "twin" to go along side.
same goes for another boss in the stable....this time maybe a red one...

Notice a trend in price

More seriously the days of no AC, radio, power locks and power windows are long gone. Besides the power locks and windows are lighter as they require less complex mechanisms to operate those items.
The best anyone can hope for now would be a base radio car with cloth interior and regular seats, base brakes, base wheels and tires and no visual sizzle which is just about what any drag racer or person wanting to really mod the car would go for.
Mach 1 might come back but it won't be for a few years.
A brand new Mustang in GT trim and lesser models is all you will see for the first 2 years.
Special editions don't show up until that initial 2 year love affair is over.
It's how they try to keep things fresh and keep an interest in the car.
Ford did this with the redesign in 05, Chevy did it with the Camaro and Dodge did it with the Challenger. 2015 Mustang will be no different.
