I lived overseas with a Mustang, and I can attest to the fact everyone knows what it is. You will also notice the Mustang does not need to have its' name stamped/stuck all over the bodywork. Look at the 2011 and no where on the car does it say, " Mustang"...no need. Now the other two Canadian muscle cars have their names on fenders and trunk lids I can only assume so the owners don't get them confused with the trucks parked near them.

Well no complaints from me if they are gonna stick with the live axle. If they do shrink the Mustang to save weight, that might pinch some interior volume though.

Now, hopefully if they keep the stick axle, Ford can take it to the next level with a Watts Link. That'd go a long way toward settling the frayed nerves of poeple used to an IRS as the Mustang goes about it business.

Very unlikely, a 19th century Conestoga axle simply won't cut it for most 21st century performance car buyers outside of some drag racer die-hards. A Watt's linkage would help it a little bit more, but really doesn't do anything for its main Achille's heel, its immense unsprung weight.

As for size, I would imagine a minor trimming of exterior dimensions but with careful design, usable interior space and comfort could be retained.

I think the fear that a Mustang designed to appeal to a broader world market would automatically become some sort of over-focus-grouped amalgam that ends up with no focus or Mustang character is a bit overblown. Sure, that risk exists, but it seems like Ford is VERY cognizant of the Mustang's appeal is, worldwide, and will not let it become some bland committee atrocity designed to sell to everyone but ending up appealing to no one.

I would expect a Mustang that is still very much Mustang in overall character but with the world class design, engineering and performance to appeal to world class standards and expectations, all at a readily attainable price point for the working man/woman.

I should have made my post more consistent, was commenting more about how an IRS does have a packaging advantage over a stick axle making usuable space in the interior easier to achieve, well for the backseat at least.

I know people opine for a miata sized Mustang with the coyote squeezed in there but the current car does have a very useful interior for a Mustang. I've carried as many as five people in a pinch (granted one of those was a medium sized kid) given its semi fastback profile.

Might have gotten this thread confised with a discussion elsewhere , but the rear suspension issue for me is no big deal (well except for the added maintenece, I'm not particularly keen on having to get the alignment checked on a regular basis ---> mac strut/SRA cars are very robust in that regard)

I wouldn't really expect anything until well after the 2013 Stang's been out for a while. It will already be tricky enough as it is for Ford to sell the existing-platform 2013 and 2014s with the all new 2015 looming on the horizon. No point in totally undercutting their current sales.
