Had to pour 2 quarts of oil after only 3000 miles

Is that normal? I decided to check the oïl on my 2016 GT with 3000 miles on it and it was almost dry! Had to pour 2 quarts, I think its a lot. I have no leakage, but I suspect it is somewhat normal during break-in period for the first 5000 miles. I am a spirited-driver and I went for 3-4 runs on the 1/4 mile, that's it.

I ask because when I did the same thing after 3000 miles on my previous 2013 V6, I only had to pour ½ quart for the same use.

That seems excessive to me. Any chance it wasn't topped off properly from the factory?

No chance, I checked it two days after I got the car from stealership and it was full. That was two months and a half ago.

It is excessive for me too, that's why I was shocked yesterday to see a dry dipstick... I've checked everything and no leak whatsoever though

Normal or not, its why all manufacturers tell owners to check the oil regularly. I check once a week but I think the Mustang owner manual requires monthly checks. Small time price to pay to avoid the hassle, cost, unintended consequences, etc. of engine damage. Glad you caught it in time.

Yeah thanks, guess I will check it more often. Like every month, each week seems a bit too much, but every ten weeks was probably not enough...

Two quarts down is hardly almost dry, the 5.0 has an 8 quart capacity.

That being said Ford will likely tell you it's within normal limits.

I agree that's excessive, my F250 that has 218,00 miles on it doesn't burn that much oil.

I just hit 2500miles on the mustang and will check tomorrow.

Hell, he made me go outside and check my oil just now. I have a 16 gt with just under 4k miles, no noticeable consumption.

I'd take a pcv hose off and see if you have compression in the crankcase.

At 53K miles (17K now supercharged), no noticeable consumption at 5K intervals when I do my oil changes.

No trouble, but I broke a piston in my 13 and I'm not sure it was burning that much.

Yeah, that's a lot. My '14 used 1/2 QT in just a few 30 minute road racing sessions when it had only 3000 miles on the ODO as well. I topped it off with higher thickness oil and it stopped.

What is your car specked for in terms of oil weights? Mine is 5W-50 and It ate factory oil which i think is just 5W-20.

How long did you let the engine sit between shutting it off and checking your oil? You want to wait 20 minutes or longer to let it trickle down into the engine pan from the top end.

I've checked it like 5 times, since I could'nt believe. All time I checked the car was sitting for at least 30 minutes and was perfectly leveled.

I've runned 500 miles since I filled it and no issues at all. My stealership said its normal for new cars to burn oil during the breakin period.

WoW! That is excessive. I have never had a new car burn that much oil in that short a time span. Only my Mazda RX-8, it would burn 1 quart a month but it was designed to do so as it injected oil into the combustion chamber to lube the apex seals.
