http://www.autoblog.com/2010/09/21/e...s-head-of-ext/

Is the mustang design team seperate from the rest of Ford?

I'm betting the 2014 design is already locked in, but how about the 2020? Will it look like a Gen Coupe or SL55AMG?

Oh no - my other thought is that this will mean more JapaEuro diapers.

Maybe this explains it. The designers were just in diapers.

It means he's highly desirable and Ford was willing to pay more.

I would think such an important position to the brand would have more of a contractual relationship and/or a counter offer if the former company liked his work vs changing companies every year or two for the next best offer. How long is he going to be at Ford?

Could be worse, Ford could have hired Chris Bangle back from obscurity to "flame-kiss" the next car.

How do we know there wasn't a counter offer from Hyundai and 'Benz? Perhaps he also had an "out clause" for certain manufacturers.

The way these guys set up their contracts they make it as easy as possible for them to move on to something new. That means if MB/Hyundai/Ford wanted a non-compete clause, they'd have to pay up big time for it.

Plus, you have to think like these designers do... they always want a new challenge... something new to design... a place to start off fresh. So I'm sure the combination of more money from Ford and the opportunity to do something new played a huge role in his decision to move.

Not even sure this guy will be working on the next Mustang. For all I know he could be designing the next Transit Connect! Given what he's done for Hyundai and MB, he did good work...for those designs. Unsure if Ford wants to go that swept back route like these manufacturers went. Who knows though.

My guess is that he will oversee the overall stylistic themes and directions for all Ford NA products but will assign specific lead designers and teams to specific vehicles, including the Mustang.

I think he really did give Hyundai a strong stylistic identity, even if you don't necessarily like it, where before it really had none, just bland vehicular appliances with a few odd, goofy attempts at real styling.

Joel was at GM before he went to Hyundai. When he got to h he than hired away from GM a bunch of folks who worked on things such as the cadillac 16, among others. Joel has always set his goals high and achieved them. He was an instructor of mine at CCS. He is a car guy.
Do you know who is responsible for exteror of the current mustang? His name is Robert Gelardi, look him up on line. Just for an example of "you don't have to be a mustang person to design the mustang"
