Edmunds Report: 2015 Ford Mustang Goes on a Diet

Just the Facts:
400+ lbs of road hugging lard trimmed off? Wow, that would be very impressive, I was guessing maybe a more modest 100-200lbs max. Combine that with a tighter (15" shorter, 6.5" narrower), slicker and sleeker shape along with an IRS and I think you have the makings of a road carving monster.
The rationale seems sound:
Bad news was that the price might go up 10%, which in and of itself is never good. However, given the vast improvements hinted at, the overall value could be much greater than the current car.
Just the Facts:
- The redesigned 2015 Ford Mustang will be slightly smaller and several hundred pounds lighter when the car goes on sale next year, Edmunds has learned.
- The Mustang will shed around 400 pounds in a quest to improve fuel economy, said a source familiar with the Mustang program.
- The dimensions of the 2015 Mustang will be reduced and the car will use lighter-weight materials as well.
The rationale seems sound:
"That car will be around for 8 to 10 years so it has to meet anticipated regulatory requirements for that long period of time," the source said.

BS. No way this car can loose 400 pounds, unless everything was made out of aluminum, even then I would be doubting the weight loss. We already seen the spy shots, its not going to be that much smaller 100-150 pounds max I predict.
EDIT: hmm let's not forget the 4 banger, don't know the weight difference between the v8 and the new v4 maybe that's where they are getting those numbers from.

If reasonably accurate, that would put the 2015 in at around Mustang II length (II: 175" / 2015: 173") and 1965 Mustang width (1965: 68" / 2015: 67.5"). While obvously quite a bit tighter than the none-to-small current Stang, these are hardly ridiculous Miata'esque numbers either. Also, an IRS need not necessarily translate into SUV-class weight, some of the lighest RWD cars out there have IRS.
I suspect these number might be a bit tighter than we'll actually see (maybe cut them in half), perhaps they were early engineering targets, but given the rationale: a 10-year life span, I suspect that the 2015 will be significantly smaller than the current car.
Or, one would at least hope so in order to meet upcoming standards and regs. If not tighter and lighter, then the only other way will likely to be cutting way back on power outputs, which, combined with a car about as heavy as the current portly model, will be devastating for performance. I'd rather have a much lighter and tighter car running today's power numbers or better all supported by a 21st century suspension to make the most of the speed generated.

I sold my 2007 Honda S2000 to make room in the garage for my new Mustang and have NO regrets. My Mustang is 5" wider, 26.3" longer, and weighs about 800 lbs more, but it's great. It has gobs of power, handles amazingly well, is very comfortable, and gets way better mileage on regular gas. Make the change. You'll love it.
drop in the 4 banger, plus other weight saving and I think its possible for a 400 pound loss, they always drop these amazing numbers but don't get fooled, same as the promotion of the 2011 Mustang. They were throwing the whole 30MPG highway numbers everywhere, but we know thats only for the V6 variant.
I would guess 3450 lbs for the V8 variant would be about the best they could do while maintaining the cost targets. Even that would be impressive... Modern cars with all the safety features are heavy
No way it will be 15" shorter just with overhangs. It would have to change wheelbase for that. It won't get any more narrow than an SN95 or the 5.0 would not fit without serious and expensive suspension redesign to get the strut towers out of the way.
Given the mules and renderings I think we'll see a shorter car with a smaller trunk with dimensions fairly close to an SN95.

One report stated that the new Shelby will be unveiled in NYC the other versions at auto shows before that.
But, another story said that Detroit will be the F150 show and NOTHING will be allowed to distract from that.
We'll know at or before the 50th anniversary date in NY.
