Tires Losing Center Tread

I have the factory Pirelli PZERO 18" pony package wheels/tires
12,500 on the Tires....driving down the road going 60 and hear loud thudding.....I pull over go go to the back of my car to find that the center tread has just peeled off.

The tires are at about 80%, and the center has just peeled off showing threads of string. No metal is showing, and the outside is still fully intact.

Is there any kind of warranty or coverage if the tire fails? I haven't been rough on the tires, an occasional spirited acceleration, but nothing to really break the car loose.

You could check the warranty page in your owners manual I know with my 09 they had a factory warranty for defects in the tires

Usually a sign of over inflation. Wear on the outer treads is usually under inflation. Or you do too many burnouts.

Peeling off and wear are two different things no? I mean it could be a symptom of over inflation.

I'm sure the tread layer was really thin before it peeled off. Otherwise it would be missing chunks of tread. I would check that air pressure first. Pirelli sucks anyways.

I check my tire pressure regularly, never over inflated. No signs of uneven wear, and I don't burnout. Like I said, spirited acceleration, not burning out. Literally the whole center just peeled off.

My main worry is that I have a 2 hour drive home, and I don't know that it's smart to drive on these. Should I get a new tire, and ask for reimbursement? Or should I just wait, drive it back home, and take it in Monday? There aren't any weird vibrations, or any pull, but I would rather be safe than sorry.

And ford took away the spare tire, so I can't swap it and get back. No bueno.

Huh. Sounds like it could be a defect if the center treads were not really worn. Take it to the dealer for sure but they really don't warranty tires for very long. Not sure if they will help you any.

They put run flats on those?
I really would be cautious running on it. Slow driving surface streets if you have to.

Right. I would hate to see more peel off and beat the hell out of your car. Even worse a blow out. Dunno man. I would replace it and just fight the dealership after.

I'm a fan of Toyo first. Best bang for the buck in my opinion. Nitto 555 is great all around tire also but they are not run flat. Stay away from Falken, khumo, and hankook.

You guys are lucky you can run summer tires all year round ... Like Al said Toyos are good tires. I like Nittos as they seem to do very well for people that I have known. I have had some Good success with my Pirellis but then again I am looking for something that has grip in the snow as well as on dry pavement.

Well, hopefully this isn't something that is happening to many people. I'm just glad it didn't hurt my car.

Probably more of a common problem than you think. There aren't many isolated cases of things like this. The only problem is of course it happens on a Friday afternoon and the dealer isn't open till Monday. Lol

I believe the tires are under warranty from the manufacturer for 12,000 miles/12 months. Your situation sounds like a defective tire. I'd definitely be pursuing a replacement tire without cost to you.

I hope your dealer can assist with this. Otherwise, I recommend contacting Deysha, the wonder Ford Customer Service rep.
