Timing guides weak
Timing guides weak
Hey all
i bought the 2010 model with the 4.0, and I read that the timing chain guides are the Achilles heel in these engines. I am not surprised as this is nothing new. For some reason these manufacturers continue to use nylon and plastic parts even knowing that they are a ticking time bomb. Well actually I know the reason it’s all money.
I have 130K on mine and it runs good and has no noise, but it seems as when and not if these guides give out the engine must be pulled to replace the chains, but my question is, would it be possible to be proactive and replace just the guides with the engine still in before they give up? Has anyone done this? I have tried to do some research but there seems to be no information on replacing just a guide
I would much rather spend a day replacing a weak component verses seeking a replacement engine in the boneyard

I think it's a good idea to replace them before they fail and cause major problems .... and I am not sure, but I think the lay-out of that engine requires that you pull the engine to replace them whether they have failed or not

Well if the engine needs to be pulled then I may as well just find a core in the junkyard and rebuild it and have it ready as a spare. Since I plan on keeping the car. Sounds extreme but I like doing stuff like this. If anyone k owns a definite answer though feel free to chime in, I’d rather just replace the guide now as an ounce of prevention
