Suspension Restoration Shake and Pop

I bought a salvaged 2011 base model 2 years ago which was nearly perfect aesthetically. After driving about a few days I realized the suspension was trashed. I needed a new rear end assembly and a transmission as well. There were all sorts of clunks and pops. The car was constantly shifting its weight and it was a bumpy ride in general. Every time I replaced a component the ride improved. I put in some oem shocks and mounts but it didn’t help much. The Moog lower control arms helped quite a bit. The Steeda swaybars rear links and Panhard bar helped a lot, but the biggest thing was the rear end assembly. The rotors were also an issue. I replaced the front wheel bearings as well. The car runs much smoother, but if I drive over 80 the car still shakes in a left and right motion. I think my tires could be out of round due to the severe shaking that has mostly been the rear end. It was so heavy I thought it was coming from the front. I’m not sure if its related but if I drive in a circle the there is a popping noise in the front. I’m not sure what I should replace to smooth things out. I’m thinking about the rack now. Anyone with a similar issue?

First, welcome to the forum.

I think you probably need to go through all of the suspension components, pay particular attention to all of the rubber bushings, they wear out and get sloppy over time. The front swaybar end-links and strut mounts are common culprits for lots of rattling and popping in the front. (you mentioned shocks and mounts but not sure if you were talking about the front)

The steering rack is not so common an issue, but it is possible. I'd go through everything else first.

I'm just the first to reply, to get your thread moving; more replies with more ideas coming soon ...

Hey Bert thanks for the reply. I did replace the front shocks and mounts along with sway bar bushings and the link bushings are new as well. I replaced all the bushings that are common culprits. The links and sway bar bushings did stabilize the car quite a bit. Apparently the rack bushing is not available. It’s kinda weird that it not on the market.

Yes I will check if I can find the pictures. The car was rear ended and the driver side rear corner panel was scraped to the door. One of the rims was bent, but it was not visually obvious. I did not see any pictures of the damage till after I bought the car and I searched up the VIN. I did not think the damaged looked that bad. The body work was already done to the vehicle before I bought it. Thank you for the info.

I have been thinking about getting the alignment of the frame checked. I have not had a friend dive behind me when I am driving yet, but it does feel like someone would see some type of abnormal movements. The car does drive strait when I remove my hands from the wheel even though the alignment of the steering wheel has been slightly to the right since I changed the rear end assembly. I had the car aligned three times while replacing components of the front suspension so it should not be too far out of spec.

Yeah this is probably happening because I had the alignment done with a bad rear end. The driver side stabilizer bar was bent around the bushing housing which was also contributing to the misalignment. This dog tracking issue could be the solution to my problem. It does seem to shake more while on the freeway curving to the left. I think I need one more alignment.

I will head to a local frame alignment shop ASAP. I have to get this issue straightened. My sanity depends on it.
