shifted coil spring?

so I was out tooling around town today, and drove over a humped section of pavement, and heard a loud popping noise from the rear of the car. Pulled into a gas station and took a look under the car, and the driver side rear coil spring was halfway off the perch!

Didnt feel comfortable driving it to the dealership, so I had it towed. I dont really think that it happened as a result of my driving style, I dont exactly drive like a bat out of hell, and the only mod I have on the car is an MGW shifter, other than that it's bone stock.

What would cause this kind of thing to happen, aside from taking the car airborne?
