what color is yours on 2011 or 2012? black or rust

Mine is extremely rust, it is starting to pit all over. i took it to my deanship and after submitting pictures to Ford..they refused to cover it. WHY??? It is a part of the cars bumper to bumper. I called 800 Ford and I am awaiting a call back .

It seems like they're supposed to do that. Pretty ugly, isn't it?

I think this is pretty normal. Not a concern of mine, and most people think I'm overly obsessed. If it bothered me, it'd be less hassle and less time for me to rattle can it w/ some Rustoleum. But don't expect a fix, they all seem to do it.

The writing covers *failure*. Not "unpretty." If they had to do unpretty, they'd have to automatically fix door dings too. There is nothing mechanically wrong with the axle, ergo, it's not covered. It is engineered, matter of fact, TO rust, or they wouldn't leave it like that. They don't paint the axles. Haven't in... well, a long time. This is normal, the axle will 'coat' itself in a covering of rust.

Kinda like those steel bridges, the rust protects the metal. Washing off the rust makes it corrode. Once the rust is done rusting, the metal inside never sees water, so it doesn't corrode further. And there's a lot of metal to go through, literally decades worth. The car will deteriorate in a *ton* of other areas way before any axle will fail.

Unless you live in a *highly* corrosive, salty environment, such as Hawaii, or northern state with lots of salted roads, it is unlikely in the extreme that any damage to the axle itself will be a worry before the rest of the metal, such as a door or fender or seat pan, show any real damage.

It is purely cosmetic in nature. Ford will NOT cover it, and that you can take to the bank.

If you want it 'fixed', get a can of Por-15, or Rustoleum, and a woven pad on a grinder, polish the axle, then paint it with one of the above.

That pretty much sums it up.

Edit: Seriously though, save the effort for when something goes wrong that really isn't normal. You don't want to develop the reputation for just being a complainer, then they won't take you seriously or be willing to help if a legitimate intermittent problem develops.

I already bought a can of POR-15 for mine, more for looks because I know it will take 69 million years for that housing to rust through.

Just a thought. You might make them replace your exhaust manifolds too. Have you looked at them lately

You know your right. The rust on the axle housing is clearly a defect. You should go buy a Honda

smartass or not, he's right. Take a look at your exhaust manifold. Some things are just normal whether you want them to be or not.

Don't forget to add the crank pulley to that list.

So that's
1. Axle housings
2. Exhaust manifolds
3. Crank pulley

Check.

Might as well add these:

Bubbling hood paint.
Door panel trim that falls off.
Pitiful OEM Motorcraft batteries.
Gas pumps turning off too soon issue.

I mean, if you can get that axle done, these ought to be a cinch.

/And I bet you can get Ford to make Trent stop commenting too, yeah?
