No Mo' 2nd Gear

I get off the highway today after a 50 mile trip and 2nd gear popped out 3 times and then, no mo' 2nd gear. Now whenever I try it just grinds. I have an appointment for service on Monday.

The service manager warned me Ford may not cover the repair if there was any abuse. I bought it new, delivered in Jan 2012, car now has 16,000 miles.

It's lowered with an axleback exhaust and intake. I told the service manager I bought a Mustang because I enjoy driving it like it was meant to, otherwise I would have purchased a Fiesta. Hopefully Ford doesn't deny the warranty claim.

This tranny, never shifted well, so lets see what they say.

Abuse would have to be outside of its normal parameters. If you not tracking your car, then your good. Even so, they would have to prove it.

It is bizarre that, after all the transmission discussions, that suddenly three people in the past week have issues where they're completely locked out of 2nd gear. All the previous discussions complained about it being difficult to get into 2nd gear but never that it was completely locked out.

Not saying you're wrong, ImpatientS197, just that it's odd! Knock on wood, I've got an early-build 2011 model and have had zero transmission issues.

Man that sucks. I hope it gets sorted out and they replace that trans for you. I'm still not sold on the tranny that's in my car. It does some weird stuff sometimes. Being that I'm in Germany I don't know what would happen if I had to take the car in for a warranty repair for the transmission.

We'll see what the tech says in the next two days, it's most likely a synchro. Car is my daily driver, never been tracked.

Be prepared for when they deny the warranty claim due to your mods. Not that they should or technically can but they might try.

"Cai and mufflers added power which the trans was not engineered for."

"Suspension modifications changed the geometry of the car therefore adding undue stress on the drivetrain."

Hopefully the service advisor is performance friendly and does the right thing.

That's what I'm expecting to hear. I'm hoping the Ford will surprise me by taking care of it.

I have purposely refrained from overly modifying the car so I wouldn't have warranty issues. Just as I have stayed away from the drag strip and the autocross events.

I would imagine I would have to drive like a complete tool to tear up a synchro/gear in 16,000 miles.

Hey Steve, upon reading that your Mustang is in Germany and by the way, she is a beauty, my thoughts automatically rolled back to a classic Shelby commercial. Thought I would share.

Just a little update. I swung by the shop today to see what the diagnosis was, but I found out that Ford just approved the tech to pull the transmission and open in up, so the car sat there for a week waiting. They are supposed to get a start on it this upcoming Monday.

The weather here is south florida has been rainy so luckily I haven't been missing much, we'll see what they next week.

Loving it over here.

OP I would take the current progress as a positive. Hope they find out what is causing it to fail. Maybe they will give you a new one.

Today marks two weeks in the shop.

I swung by on Saturday and I'm not sure the service writer really knows anything about cars, but his explanation to me was the following:

The tranny is out of the car and the tech found something wrong with the planetary gear the parts are here and he should be putting it back together this week. We just want to make sure that everything they need is here and find out what caused the problem.

So that sounds like Ford is covering it under warranty, but like I said the tech didn't leave me confident that he knew what is really happening.

Think they would deny something like this if he had an aftermarket short throw shifter or bracket?

Got some bad news today, the parts needed to repair my transmission are on backorder until June 7th. So I won't get my car back until mid to late June.

Wow that's like six weeks down time isn't it? You might consider sending Ford csr Deysha a PM, maybe she can help out.
