First Oil Change

Took my 2011 Mustang Gt into the dealer for it's free oil change. I was in a hurry to get home because my son had Taekwando testing. When i got home I looked at my reciept and noticed it said "Oil Change Kit" 6 quarts of oil and filter. I thought the 2011 Mustang hold 8 quarts so I checked it and sure enough it's not full. What oil should I go buy to top it off? Thanks.

I'd call the service manager at the dealer and tell them they better come out and fill it up!

You would think a dealer would know things like this. I took my V-6 in for a 'free' oil change. I knew my V-6 held 6 quarts, when finished i asked the oil change guy, how many quarts of oil did you pour in? He told me "i put in 5 quarts and checked the level but had to add another quart to fill it up". LOL!!! At least my dealer's oil changer checked the oil level to make sure it was full.

Cool

I learned to always check the oil after an oil change.
When I got the Ranger it was a good thing.
My Ranger only takes 4 quarts and the old Lincoln-Mercury dealer put in 5.

Lesson Learned: Always check the oil and the caps before leaving the dealership after an oil change.

I learned the same lesson a few weeks back, when I took my car in for an oil change just to drive home and find the service techs never put the oil cap back on! Granted, the dealer replaced the oil cap free of charge and I only drove the car lightly and for a few miles. But had I not checked it when I got home, this could have been really bad.

Now, as **** as it sounds I check the oil level, caps, and cleanliness under the hood before I even depart the lot. I could careless what the service manager thinks! Bottom line, it's not his car and I don't trust those so called "ASE" certified techs.

What if dealer gives you a free change?

I get coupons for dealer oil changes at $9.95 or less a couple times a year (sometimes free).
Yeah, my GT has never been back to a dealer for anything but...
For the other vehicles, a free (or almost free) change is way cheaper and easier than DIY.
The OP got a free change. I might have done the same thing then.
At $24.95 or so, DIY is what I do.

I'm not crying about the dealer i'm just stating the facts. I'm sure alot of people take their cars to the dealer for oil changes and I'm just letting them know to watch out because it seems the service department does not know that the new 5.0 takes 8 quarts. Maybe you work at a dealer?

i work at a dealer, u guys most go to some **** hole. i wouldnt get my oil or trans service done a dealer anyway. unless u tell them to use bottled oil & trans fluid. Bulk oil & trans fluid is junk, the tank and lines to the pump get moisture in them. someone was probably lazy and didnt check it. i would say 99% of the time for repairs to a stock car, a dealer will fix it right with ford parts.

I had the dealer overfill my Ranger. I took in a case of mobile one and there weren't any quarts left when I picked up the truck. I asked the service manager where my quart of oil was and he says, oh $hit. Checked it and it was overfilled. Had to put it back on the rack and drain some out. Then they paid me for a new quart of oil. Idiots!

I do it at home- pet peeve about prefilling the filter(no dry start to fill it), looking for metal chips in the filter threads(have found several times), etc...plus while its up in the air like to look over rubber boots on balljoints/tierod ends/wipe down the underside...37k, and 5 yrs old soon, still like new underneath except for the unpainted axle and discolored tailpipes...

I don't let anyone else change the oil in my 3 vehicles. My 06 GT is actually very easy to service once I drive it up on the ramps. I see able body guys waiting in line at Iffy Lube and just shake my head. In the time it took them to drive there I can have mine done.

I've just heard too many horror stories to let someone else do my oil. I was raised to just do it yourself, and take the time to learn about your car, as well as check the little things that some dealerships often overlook.

From other boards, I've heard stories of places cutting holes in the splash shields, leaving the drain plug off, and forgetting to put the oil cap back on. I'll pass on putting that to chance in my car.
