Part of me just wants to say "screw it" and live with it but then i have some friends riding and it goes 'grrrrrrinnndddd' and then have to listen to the "that's a Ford for ya".

Anyway, Ford and the dealer have been extremely helpful and seem to want to fix it.

Thanks Deysha...
Whats the build date on your car? Or the # of your Boss.

What I've noticed is that 2nd gear on these cars is definitely a bit touchy. I've gotten to the point where I can predict when 2nd gear will push back on the shifter. It takes varying amounts of throttle and clutch release to get her to shift smooth. When I make a mistake a just get that audible clunk / chatter with the shifter bucking a little but no audible grinding. If you have audible loud (and I mean loud) grinding then you have a problem but if its similar to what I described its really just nature of the beast. Takes finesse to get 2nd smooth sometimes.

If you want to call it junk. Mine shifts very well just takes some getting used to. Occasionally I make a mistake and shift very poorly causing a clunky shift but its just user error.

This constant made in China bashing is always funny to see. I'm not too happy to see it personally but its just todays globalization. Doesn't mean the quality is poor.

My '11 was built on Jun 9, 2010. I had the fluid TSB completed last Oct, and I drive the car all year, although not every day. Living in South Dakota, the temperatures can get extremely cold; however, this year has been fairly mild, 72 degrees yesterday. I did notice an immediate improvement in shift quality after the TSB service, especially when the temperature dropped below zero.

I would recommend you let the new parts work in over a few thousand miles, unless you feel there is something else going on inside the transmission, as mine, just with the fluid change, seems to have gotten significantly better as the miles increase. I have already decided to have another fluid change completed at 25000 miles, just see what it looks like, and to see if there is an abnormal amount of metal shavings, etc.

Please keep us informed of what the dealer found/finds. Sounds like your dealer is really working with you.

This is why I asked your build date.
The dates below are transmission production dates. as long as the production date of your car is 1-2 weeks after that it should have the update.

04/26/2010: Revised Clutch Pedal Return Spring
For clutch stay-out at high RPMs

09/07/2010: Changed 5th/6th gear surface finish
Addresses grinding during 5th gear shifts

10/19/2010: Revised fastener/thread locker
Addresses clutch fastener back out

01/07/2011: Revised Clutch Spring Finger Height
For clutch stay-out at high RPMs

02/25/2011: Fourth gear weld incomplete during production
Process verification to ensure complete gear welding

07/01/2011: Vehicle message center
Extended skip-shift illumination time so drivers aware of engagement

07/25/2011: Added phosphate coating to gears
Reduces gear noise

07/25/2011: Lower viscosity lubricant
To reduce shift effort in all temps

08/31/2011: Changed clearance between 2nd gear friction ring & cone
Resolve ring to gear face contact and gear clash

And some more info on the 8/31 change:

Second gear friction ring 08/31/2011

Changed clearance
specification between
friction ring and cone.

Resolve potential ring
to gear face contact.
Increased effort/gear
clash.

They rebuilt part of my transmission but i doubt these things got added. They didnt even add the right fluid on the rebuild which, to me, should have been standard..
Anyway, we will see what happens.

The service manager "couldnt repeat" the grinding issue so i go and take him for a ride and it does it 2x in a 15 minute drive. He is saying that it is normal...
I never thought for a minute that Ford would back away from this issue and that they would take care of it. I guess i was wrong, which is extremely disappointing, to say the least.

My '11 5.0L was built Jan 2011 and has the cold shifting problem. TSB was done a few months ago (thinner fluid) and it helped a little, but still grinding into 2nd when cold. Installed MGW shifter this week and it's almost entirely gone now (and it's still cold outside near freezing in the morning). The MGW shifter likely will deprive me of getting any warranty work done on the trans, but the Ford fix wasn't working for me so I went to the aftermarket for help.

The other issue is that after they rebuilt it the first time, there is a lot of noise coming from the transmission with the clutch depressed and you are rolling to a stop. it was not doing this previously, so it makes me believe that there is something internal that aint quite right.... (and it aint in the driver seat!)
