My left-side steering wheel D-pad (Message Center buttons) is completely unresponsive. I am also experiencing "ghost" menu cycling where the IPC display scrolls through menus on its own randomly. All other buttons are fully functional


• DTC B1A82:23-08: External Trip Switch - Signal Stuck Low.

• DTC U0401:81-0A: Invalid Data Received from PCM.

• Live Data: In the IPC Data Logger, the PID MSG_CNTR_BTN is permanently stuck on "Depressed".

After resetting all codes they return immediately and the buttons never work

Troubleshooting I’ve already done:

1. Replaced Components: My local dealership replaced the OEM steering wheel buttons. After that was unsuccessful I replaced the clock spring wiring harness and have attempted to diagnose further with FORScan with no luck

2. Clock Spring Isolation: I removed the steering column shroud and unplugged the main 14-pin black connector from the stationary back-plate of the clock spring. With the steering wheel and clock spring disconnected, the FORScan PID MSG_CNTR_BTN remains stuck on "Depressed."

3. Turning the wheel left and right slowly does not bring back any functionality of the buttons. They have never worked since I’ve owned the car. The only other code that comes up through FORscan is for PO100 (likely unrelated but I’m trying to squeeze any information possible)

Im very stuck on what to do, since I’ve done all of these steps I’ve checked under the dash for any frayed wiring or disconnections but I haven’t found any.

If anyone has ideas it would be greatly appreciated, The OIL SERVICE message is on my screen permanently and I’d like to change the interior colors of my premium!

 

I can't assist with your problem but having my own '14 GT makes me concerned. Has your car sat a lot, or have high miles where many components seem to go bad?

 

This seems to be a unicorn issue to me. I haven’t found any other Mustang that specifically lost the D-Pad button but I have seen a lot of cases where people have lost all function in the left/right side in multiple S197 and S550s, in that case the solution always ended up being a button replacement or clock spring wire harness replacement from what I’ve seen (which are both easy fixes) followed by a FORScan DTC code reset. My car has 70,000 miles and is driven daily, the only time it sits is in the heavy winter months. If you were to solve a similar problem it would be the buttons or the clock spring 99.9% of the time so you have nothing to worry about.
