Thinking about upgrading shaker 500
Thinking about upgrading shaker 500
I am thinking about upgrading the 500 system with a sub for the rear and replacement speakers in the front and rear deck. I plan on leaving the stock subs in the door alone. how does this look for a setup?

Amp = great (but overpriced, talk to a local dealer; you can get it for cheaper...or get the Alpine PDX-5, very similar performance). Sub = great. Cleansweep = great. Speakers = GARBAGE. These are the most important thing on your list! Your speakers play 90% of your music. This is where you want quality.
What type of music do you listen to? What is your budget (obviously you have a lot to work with if you're buying JL from Crutchfield). Are you installing, or are you taking it somewhere? Did you factor in sound deadening?

Also, how often do you have rear passengers? Skip the rear speakers, spend double the amount on better fronts. Or, get decent fronts, then add 8" midbasses. If you are going to spend that much on the JL amp, you might as well get an Audison LRx5.1k. I am running that amp now, with an Audison BitOne processor. It's worth it. Trust me.
Well I wont have the car till Friday but I doubt I will be having many people in the back, it is pretty cramped there. So leave the backs stock and go all out on the fronts? And there is noooo way I would ever buy from crutchfield. I just use that site because you can see what fits your vehicle. I will have to look into the Audison, I am assuming I wont need a 5 channel if I just replace the front speakers? Sorry for dumb questions, I have always just had stupid big speakers in the back of my car and never paid attention to actual quality.
I listen to everything, but mostly classic rock, rap, and dubstep
What would you recommend for good fronts?

I went with:
Pioneer FB90 DVD receiver
Alpine PDX-4.100 amp
Apline PDX-1.600 amp
2 - 12" Alpine SWS-1243D subwoofers
Boston Acoustic SR-50 front speakers
Boston Acoustic SC85 rear speakers
Custom Fiberglass sub enclosure
My friend who has installed competition stereos in the past says it's the cleanest best sounding system he's heard. I say check out how they sound. They won't disappoint!

I want to stick with the stealth box because I value trunk space. But I am def open to speaker ideas for the front and rear. I will have this car for a long time so I might as well enjoy every aspect of it.

OP, where are you located? Do you have higher end audio shops to go try out different speakers? Image Dynamics is a very high quality, decently priced brand. I would replace the door subs too. Your factory system is tuned specifically for your factory speakers. It amazes me when people just swap out the 5x7s and convince themselves that they all of a sudden have an amazing sounding system. In reality, they hear a different sound, and assume that means better because they don't know any better. If you just replace the speakers and not the door subs, you won't be getting the full potential out of either one.
JL makes great subs and amps, but their speakers are lacking. You can do better for your money. What is your budget and will you be installing/are you taking it somewhere?
So $2k for everything? Components/sub/amp, wiring, sound deadening? Do you have the Electronics Package, or standard Shaker 500? And will you be installing, or do you need someone to install for you? I would ask around on caraudio/com/forum to see if there's an expert in the area who could help you do it yourself...

Yea roughly 2k for everything. I have the electronics package so wont be replacing anything HU wise. As far as door speakers and all I will prob do that myself. But the amp and sub I would have someone else do. I will check out that site. Thank you.
I would use the vibration dampener on the outer and inner door skins, and rear decklid. You might need some on the trunklid, but most likely not if you remove the rear speakers and leave the holes open for the bass to pass through to the cabin. If you do end up going with the JL Cleansweep, it is very easy to tap into the signal from either the rear factory amp or rear speaker hookup. I'll shoot you a PM with a guy to talk to on caraudioforums. He can get you set up.
Instead of leaving the rear speakers stock, I would remove them altogether though. 1) It allows the bass to travel in to the cabin easier so you're not pounding the trunk with pressure; 2) when you go to a concert the music comes from in front of you, not behind you, so your music will sound more natural once you get used to not hearing stuff behind you; and 3) music is recored in 2channel...having 4 channels of music is unnecessary. You only really need rear speakers if you are listening to 5.1 surround sound audio. It also allows you to buy better front speakers!
For that budget, I would do this: Alpine SPX-17 Pro (or Reference for a little money savings), the JL Stealthbox W6, the HD 900/5 and a Audison Bit One. To save a little money, you could go for the Alpine PDX-5. I would save up a little more and either do a) JL ZR800 midbasses to replace the 8" door subs (for tighter, punchier midbass); or b) go with JL W1 or W3 8" subs to replace the door subs, for deeper bass. The W6 will bring in the low end quite a bit, especially if you ditch the rear speakers. Personally, I would go with the 8" midbasses, but it would be up to you.
If you went with a 5channel amp, you could use the front 2 channels to power the component speakers, the rear two channels for the 8" subs/midbasses and the sub channel for the W6. This would give you a really good sounding system. That may put you over budget a little bit, but it would be so worth it. Also, you could just do everything minus the 8s to see how that sounds, then add them later if you want to tighten up that 400-100hz range...
