SYNC and aftermarket

Is there a way to add an aftermarket navigation system to a SYNC equipped vehicle and the functions still work? Also, I'd like to go thus route if possible; could the SYNC navigation be bought at a later date and installed by the dealer?

There are a couple of options you can use to keep sync, although I don't know why you would want to keep it if you get a decent NAV head unit. the sync modules look obscenely obvious they are add-ons, though.

this is one of the options:
Amazon.com: PAC MS-FRD1 Radio Replacement Interface with SYNC Retention: Car Electronics Amazon.com: PAC MS-FRD1 Radio Replacement Interface with SYNC Retention: Car Electronics
.

adding a factory nav is a bit more involved and really expensive. not worth it IMHO, but totally up to you.

Most current nav devices come loaded with features that they don't depend on sync but do its job too

As for pricing, I can speak for Canada that once I asked how much a ford nav would be for 08 they said $3500 for a $1000 factory option..I said forget it I'd put that $3500 down towards a new car

I don't believe so, as SYNC is tied into so many of the car's systems. You could only use a Ford factory navigation, but even that would be too costly to wire up. SYNC is bundled with everything from the safety restraint systems to drivetrain info. Its really complex how many things its attached to.

God bless my Tom-Tom....$89.00, and the wench within it tells me when to turn. She has not let me down yet, and my Sync has no problem with her!

Hey, AuTo!

SYNC aftermarket kits are available on select vehicles, for specific model years. Here's a link to view features by model year:

Otherwise, feel free to search the Ford accessories store:

If you have any questions, let me know.

Thanks for all the input guys! I think I'm leaning towards the Scosche unit. It's a really nice unit that's affordable, allows me to put an aftermarket nav radio in the car, and still retains the use of the stock USB port. I think we have a winner!!!

Keep in mind that none of the Sync information will show up on the aftermarket display. That's what that little display with the kit is for. I had an aftermarket HU w/Nav put in my wife's '10 Explorer w/Sync and she hated it. I told the guy that I didn't want that cheesy display stuck to the dash so he put it in the console. That completely defeated the purpose of Sync being a safety device since she would have needed to lift the console lid to see who was calling. I had the entire system ripped out and went back to stock. Until the aftermarket can completely integrate all Sync features to their HU's, I won't be revisiting the project.

the new metra kit will allow you to keep sync and it will display sync data however you have to buy their sync module with the dash kit. not sure when that is coming out though.

So all Sync information will show up on the aftermarket HU?

that's what they're claiming on their press release (see other thread on scosche dash kit). This is a new metra kit that has a touchscreen very similar to the scosche kit, but without any buttons on it and without the factory display.

Oh yes I know. My main goal was finding something that would just simply allow me to have a touchscreen nav system and the USB and aux jacks still work that come stock with the car and the scosche kit delivers that along with that very attractive a/c control screen and not those ugly buttons on the metra unit.. If the car came with the stock nav screen then I'd be satisfied with that. My biggest thing was to have a screen.
