Steering Wheel Swap

If I wanted to swap this steering wheel:

http://www.americanmuscle.com/boss-s...heel-1012.html

into my base GT, would all the buttons work? I'd hope the cruise would, but would the radio buttons work too?

Does anyone know how the wiring would go? Plug n play or is there splicing?

Thanks in advance, I can already hear the "use the search function" comments, but the search function on this website sucks.

That guy has a shaker radio, do boss cars have a shaker? I thought they had a base style radio?

Also mentions nothing about the cruise.

Thats what I thought, its the same as the one in the base GT right?

If thats the case it gives me hope the radio buttons would work, even if there is some wiring involved the head unit might accept the signals.

The Radio buttons will not work unless you swap in a Shaker HU ...

the buttons don't come with the wheel. You remove the buttons from the OEM steering wheel and put them into the Boss 302 wheel. The wheel has nothing to do with the radio or OEM wiring harness

What??? the Boss steering wheel works in ANY 2010+ mustang whether it be a base model or premium. Your confusing the steering wheel and the buttons that are in the wheel. That is based on radio option your car has

AM pictures the wheel with buttons but without the airbag, I assumed thats how it came. I will email them for clarification.

I understand the wheel fits, but the buttons which control the non shaker 500 radio in the boss will not control anything but a shaker 500 radio in a gt (according to previous posts).

I have the Boss Wheel .. It comes with the buttons. Cruise control on the left and Radio controls (no sync controls) on the right. The buttons pop out so I swapped the non-sync radio buttons with the SYNC radio buttons off my premium wheel.

The BOSS specific radio DOES support steering wheel controls .. the base Mustang Radio does not. So to use steering wheel controls you need swap in either a BOSS HU or a Shaker HU.

Makes perfect sense, I guess I shouldn't have assumed that because it wasnt a shaker it was exactly the same as the base one.

If anybody knows anyone selling either of those HU I will buy it.

Is the BOSS wheel thicker than the standard wheel? It looks about the same.

I have a thread over on AFM.

You can replace the base steering wheel and activate the stereo controls by updating the ACM as-built-data. Its about a 15-20 minute job for a tech that knows IDS. You simply change the ACM code to match a car that came with the steering wheel you upgraded to. Its just 8 bytes difference between a base and a Boss302 ACM as-built codes for example. You may have to convince your dealer to do it. Not an issue if you know an independent shop that uses IDS (update/diagnostic software for Ford/Lincoln/Mazda/etc. cars).

And, yes the cruise will work without doing anything (other than installing the wheel).

FYI, the time I mentioned for them to activate the stereo controls was if you provide the ACM data for them to load. It takes longer if they have to look it up. And to look it up they need the VIN of a car that came with the wheel.

Basically, what they will do is tell the system the ACM was replaced and needs the as-built-data loaded. It may help to explain that to them since it is not a common procedure, nor is it one that is taught as a means of upgrading a steering wheel.

Below is the ACM as-built-data for a Boss 302. As you can see, there really isn't much to ACM as-built data. The 727-nn-nn parts aren't even part of the data, they just identify where the following data goes. I checked several Boss 302s and they were all identical. And the only difference to my car's as-built data is the very first line which must define the steering wheel.

I plan to publish as-built data for Premiums, GT500s and hopefully 18R (ornamentation package) steering wheels after more research. I suspect it may not even matter which is used since all those wheels use the same stereo controls. Some just also have a Sync button which of course will never work in a base car.

For a Premium or GT500 wheel, I would give them a VIN of a car without audio upgrades. It probably doesn't matter, but why risk it until more is known.

So take them a VIN for a car that came with the steering wheel you are adding so they can look up the as-built-data. They aren't hard to find in dealer on-line inventories, eBay, auto-trader, etc.. I would take the VIN even if you can provide the data just in case the dealer wants to double check themselves.

Sample Boss 302 ACM as-built-data:

727-01-01 0044 908B 64F3
727-01-02 0435
727-02-01 2E5F
727-03-01 1446
727-04-01 0033
727-05-01 0007 2F57 5B1C
727-05-02 765B 572F 0793
727-06-01 000A 3335 5C03
727-06-02 645C 3533 0A68
727-07-01 000A 3335 5C04
727-07-02 645C 3533 0A69

Have you considered going to an upholstery shop and having it wrapped in suede and restitched? It'd be a lot cheaper and you could get the stitching in (any colour you like)... Plus, then you'd know the buttons will work

If I knew of a shop that would do that I would consider it, blue sticthing would be neat.

Also the spokes of the premium wheels are silver, not a deal breaker just another difference.
