What are some good speakers you guys recommend to upgrade the front and rear speakers in my 2012 GT withOUT the shaker radio. Most of the threads I found had people upgrading the 6x9's in the doors but leaving the sub alone, and choosing the 6x9 to compliment the already present sub in the shaker system.

I am looking for recommendations of what speaker that will give all around better sound, including bass since I have no subs.

I will probably just do fronts but maybe all 4 after I hear what fronts sound like.

Without modifications 6x8's or 5.25's will be pretty much the only choices to go with. Now what type you choose will make a big difference in the sound. Definitely reasearch brands before you buy. Specifically which ones work best with factory radios. The sensitivity will make a difference in how the speaker sounds with a lower power source.

 

Right, so which ones lol. I'm not necessarily looking for cheap as much as clean bass and decent highs.

 

"Speaker efficiency, also known as speaker sensitivity, is a measure of the speaker's output, measured in decibels, with a specified amount of amplifier power. For example, speaker efficiency is often measured with a microphone (connected to a sound level meter) placed one meter from the speaker . One watt of power is delivered to the speaker and the level meter measures the volume in decibels. The output level results in a measure of efficiency. Speakers range in efficiency or sensitivity from about 85dB (very inefficient) up to 105dB (very efficient). As a comparison, a speaker with 85 dB efficiency rating will take twice the amplifier power to reach to same volume as a speaker with 88 dB efficiency. Similarly, a speaker with a 88 dB efficiency rating will require ten times more power than a speaker with a 98 dB efficiency rating to play at the same level. If you're starting with a 100 watt/channel receiver, you would need 1000 watts (!) of power output to double the perceived volume level. "

So what you have to do is find speakers with a Higher sensitivity rating for lower power setups. Where a speaker with a lower sensitivity will have better sound quality and accuracy but not be as loud. Unless you add more power through amplification. Some examples are Infinity reference series 6x8's have the higher sensitivity (93) versus the Alpine Type S 6x8's (88). Which means that the Alpines will require more power to get to the same volume as the Infinity's. Thats not to say the either brand is better than the other, it just all depends on your setup and preference. I would go to an audio store that has the brands you are comparing on display and listen to them to see what your preferences are and then compare the sensitivity ratings on those to narrow down the choice. You may prefer the lower sensitivity rating's sound over the volume from the higher sensitivity speakers.

Yes the factory speakers are 6x8's front and rear. You can get some adapter plates and install 5.25's or install 5.25 inch components in front and back. Those will give you better sound but you may get better bass response out of the 6x8's. If you really want to step things up get a set of components for the fronts and get the 6x8 coaxials for the rear. Then add a small amplified sub in the trunk like an Infinity Basslink. That should wake up the sound in the car very nicely!

 

I put 6 1/2 kenwood components front and rear with a 800 watt 4 channel kenwood amp cost 400 for everything on amazon
