A solution to paint wearing off steering wheel buttons

I bought a Rust-Oleum American Accents Decorative Paint pen in satin black. The color match is close enough to touch up small areas but I'm not sure how well it would do on larger areas. If you're car is out of warranty, this is a good option to replacing the buttons.

I was thinking of wrapping them in matte clear vinyl as soon as I get my car, so that they stay perfect for the life of the car. Thoughts?
