Restitched GT500 steering wheel

I picked up a new 2010+ GT500 wheel for install in my '05, but the white stitching, as much as many folks really like it, wasn't going to fly with my red/black interior.

Just finished restitching the wheel in red (took a good bit of willpower to take an x-acto to a brand new steering wheel)

Anyway, here's a few shots of the results:

Good Job! Looks great! A good while back I changed the black thread to white on my leather wheel and now it goes with the take off 2010 seat covers I installed which have the white stitching.

Awesome job! Are you going to change the LEDs to green to match the rest of your interior? Or have you already changed the interior to blue?...

Thanks

Ahead of the game as far as the dash goes. The entire interior was switched to blue LEDs a couple years back

Yeah, if I had any white stitching at all, I would have left it, but my seats are Katzkins, black with red center inserts and red stitching, so the white stitching would have just looked weird.

Looking forward to getting this in, and the radio controls working (I've figured out a way to connect the wheel controls to my Kenwood deck which should work fine)

Well of course the stitching had to be changed to red if you have red seat inserts! That IS the way to go!

Am I seeing things or did you glue your remote to the head of your key?

No, you're not seeing things, that's exactly what I did right after I got the car. Hated the remote brushing my knee all the time.

Why is this in the 2010+ plus section when this is a 2006 car....

I put it here because it's a 2010+ part, and I thought the restitching might be of interest. The installed shot was just incidental.

How long did it take and how hard was it to restitch it...?

I may go the lazy route and just dye the stitches....

A couple hours for the whole thing. I wouldn't try dying the factory stitches for two reasons, firstly, the thread is synthetic and won't take most dyes well, second, it would be near impossible to apply dye that finely and not end up staining the leather and/or alcantara.

If you do decide to bite the bullet and redo yours, get polyester thread. It's the most colorfast for sunlight exposure. Size 138 seems to match the factory thread size.

I would not dye it. Sounds like a big mess and more time than actually stitching the wheel. Stitching is much easier than you think. If you can lace shoes, you can stitch. It only takes about two hours to do it and that is working with breaks.

Here is my original thread... no pun intended!

Another hint, use tapestry needles. The points are a bit blunt, and won't stick in the leather while you're locating the existing holes. Either straight or curved will work ok. A size 20 needle is good for this.
