Bullitt steering wheel installation on 2010+

Hey, all.
I purchased the 2005-2009 Bullitt stering wheel to install on my 2011 base GT.

Attempted the install, and was almost done, until I found out my 2011 has a different electrical connector than the 2005-2009.

Has anyone done this on a 2010+?
How much of a hassle was it to swap out the electrical harness between the Bullitt wheel and the stock one?
I've also heard the buttons on the Bullitt wheel illuminate green, but they can be popped out and swapped with the ones in the stock wheel.

If there's a way to F this up, I will, so I'm looking for some advice from someone who's' done it.

Thanks.

I seem to recall that you need to remove the cruise buttones from your stock wheel and install them into the Bullitt steering wheel, since, as you noticed, the harness/plug changed.

Dunno about the Bullitt steering wheel, but here's my base to GT500 swap.

Simple... 3 connections, and a big bolt.

I put a gt500 wheel from an 09 in my 2010. I swapped the harness from the 2010 into the GT500 wheel. The plug on the base model 2010 that was on the wheel is not the same as the plug on the GT500 on the end that goes to the column. But the end that plugs into the cruse control switch is the same.

I did it to my car easy swap.

So, y'all had to swap the wiring harness from the old wheel to the new, and it was no big deal?
908ssp:
It just unplugs from one, and plugs into the other?
Do I need to pop the actual buttons out?
Did you just stick a screwdriver behind them and pry them out? Are they connected to anything?

I should have looked into it more, when I did my first attempt.
I had the new one all bolted on, and when I went to connect that connector, and it didn't fit, I gave up, swore a lot, and put the old one back on.

Thanks, all, for your help.

I don't remember pulling any buttons so I think not. I took the wiring harness from the 2010 plastic wheel and stuck in the 2009 leather GT500 wheel. Unplugged from the from the 2010 wheel and plugged into the 2009 wheel nothing to it. The hardest part of the whole thing was getting the airbag screws back in the holes in the sides.

I took a look at it again last night. Mine looks just like this picture.
See in the picture how the wire harness comes from connectors near the cruise buttons, then is routed under that metal cover?
I can't seem to figure out how to get the wires out from underneath that cover. They are clipped in under there.
Did you all have to remove that to get the wires out?
Also, on the left side, my connector is all taped over.
I was thinking this would just been plug and play, sort of.
But the more I look into it, the more stuff I've got to take apart. :(

I have no idea... i didnt try... =\

I work in a room full of electrical engineers. We deal with electrical connectors as a part of our jobs.
None of us can figure this out.
4 different people have had a shot at trying to get those connectors out.
I took the horn bracket out.
I can see the wiring harness sitting there, taunting me, saying "ha ha, you can't get me out! NO LEATHER WHEEL FOR YOU!!!"

There's got to be a tab on those connectors we can't see.

They might have simply just popped out on the rest of yours, but not these.

I just changed my base plastic wheel yesterday to a SVT wheel with the red stitching. I am loving it today. Highly recommended.

I changed the buttons as well as the harness. It was tough getting them out but managed to do it without breaking anything. Start by gently prying on the wire side a little and then the other side with very thin screwdriver. The white wire holders will pop out by pushing on them from the backside of the steering wheel through the holes. You will need to remove the tape to disconnect the buttons from the harness.

Yesterday I also changed all 4 speakers to Infinity Kappa 6x8s with adjustable tweeters and crossovers. Sounds great. It took most of the afternoon to do everything, but I can't think of a better way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

So instead of hassling with getting that wire connector out of the buttons, you just pop the whole button assembly out?

Magnamover Mar 26, 2011 07:36 AM

Yup, I bought my wheel off ebay used, and decided not to use the existing buttons because I didn't know how old they were. Once I got over the worry of breaking the buttons, prying them out was easy. Everybody needs to change that crappy plastic wheel out.

JPJr Mar 28, 2011 07:45 AM

So, this whole assembly just pops out as one piece? Connector, buttons, and all?
I stuck a screwdriver under the connector end and started to pry, but it didn't look like anything was budging.
I really don't want to F up my wheel.

Magnamover is correct. I put a SVT wheel on my '10 GT. Just swap both sets of switches from the original wheel to the new one. I also had to remove the horn bracket for access. None of it is a big deal but prying out the buttons is a little unnerving at first. Just go slow and careful and they'll pop out and back in with no problems.

One other word of advice: be careful when popping those airbag screw covers back in. If you go too far, they'll go through and fall into the steering wheel cavity and you'll have to remove the airbag (again) to retrieve the plug. Don't ask how I know this... :shakehead:

I have the leather SVT wheel with red stitching. It looks and feels great!

McConnell2464 Mar 30, 2011 06:35 AM

Would this device allow a base model to gain steering wheel controls for volume?

I have been trying to just slide the whole button assembly out toward the center of the wheel. I thought it would just easily slide out with no force. Just pull on the wires, and it'd slide right out.
It's not going so well.
It doesn't look like that button assembly can pop "up" and out through the "front" face of the wheel spoke.
What's holding them in there?

There's really nothing holding the switch assemblies in there. It's just a tight fit. They just pry out towards you. Put a small flat screwdriver under the centermost end of the switch assembly (as you're loooking at the wheel) and pry out of the steering wheel.

DONE!
Thank you to everyone who helped me out through this... PMing, pictures.
I only broke one retainer pin getting the buttons out of my stock wheel. No big deal, they still fit snugly in the new Bullitt wheel.
