I have the Shaker 500 with factory nav. system in my 2013 and am looking to add a relatively cheap sub in the trunk to compliment the door subs. I'm leaning towards the MTX amplified ThunderForm which is custom fit to the Mustang. Would I be able to do this without having an aftermarket head unit? Also, would the bass adjustor on the nav. system adjust the bass of the door subs, trunk sub, or both?

Hmmm, I would call Crutchfield to verify, but I don't think you would be able to control an aftermarket amp with the stock head unit.

 

Im sure you can. Just have to buy the right adapter to hook to your head unit

OP: ive been lookin at the JL stealthbox and its looks like a great sub. Pricey yes but it comes in a custom built box to screw in to the pssenger side of the trunkwell still preserving almost the entire trunk. 14" sub

 

I have the JL Audio Stealthbox with a 600 watt RMS amp and you can control the bass of the sub with the radio, although I have an aftermarket HU. The MTX is basically a cheaper version of the Stealthbox but unless you want teeth chattering bass then the MTX will be enough. You will still be able to control the bass from the stock HU as long as the installer hooks it up correctly, and you can still fine tune it with the controls on the amp, if it has them. I love my setup but if I did it over again I'd save the money and get the MTX because I can only stand so much "bump" before it gets old.

 

 

From Crutchfield's site:

"MTX's Electronic Bass Control (EBC) lets you adjust the bass level from the driver's seat."

That makes me think that you don't control it with the head unit, since they're giving you a separate control for it.

It also says that it accepts preamp and speaker-level inputs, FWIW.

 

The MTX sucks. I had it and ended up selling it. The box is made from cheap plastic and flexes. In turn you miss the low bass notes.

Don't do it..,,save up and get something better. Even if you aren't trying to beat the block down.

 

I read about a new Kicker sub in the August edition of 5.0 magazine, and found it on their blog - here. It doesnt give a price, but says available from Kicker dealers and select Ford Dealers across North America.

$699, 200W Amplified sub enclosure. Price of the JL, comes with amp, but about 1/3 the wattage of the JL, and no way that sub is nearly as good.

 

I'd be willing to spend $200 on a sub

 

Is there much rattle with the JL Audio Stealthbox? It sounds like it had quite a bit more power than the MTX but I wouldn't be happy if there was a rattle.

 

The JL stealth boxes are excellent. I used to sell and install them. If you put some type of dampening in your car, like dynomat, it would improve the sound. You can easily add a sub to stock system using a hi to low converter. There is sometimes some background hum but you would never notice it through a sub amp. I would highly recommend the JL box.

These should be 8" subs. I haven't dug into them yet to get any more info than that.

interesting. I find myself happy enough with my stock Shaker Pro.. though I wish the output of the trunk sub was a bit more. This is especially since I have a convertible, and the trunk and interior are separate. No pass thru.

 

Put this Rocksford Fosgate in the Shelby I had because the stock system with the Navi had NO bass. It was inexpensive and added some real kick. Had speaker level inputs and an adjustable gain that ran to the front of the car.
