You just drill it out to the tweeter size you need...
Thank you

I installed a set of Pioneer TSD6802R speaker sets in the door panels, they sound much better than stock ones and it is an easy install. Just make sure when using a wire adapter that you check the polarity!
I will install the same in the back, as soon as I figured how to uninstall the stock speakers.

Sorry to bring this thread back but I have some questions.

I have a 2014 GT Premium with the standard Shaker system with Navigation. I want to upgrade the upper door speakers and leave the door subs alone. Just a simple speaker upgrade.

Can I upgrade the upper speakers with aftermarket 5.25" components and tweeters while utilizing the factory wiring and amp? I know the amp will really bring things to life, but will I see an upgrade over the stock crappy speakers with just a speaker swap?

Do I want 2 ohm or 4 ohm component speakers? Thanks!

Yes you can. And 2ohm would be better, being that the factory speakers are 2 ohm. I haven't pulled my doors apart, but I'm somewhat planning on using the factory "crossover" too, although it's really just a capacitor wired in between the mid and tweet to separate the high frequencies.

Thanks!

Would I be better off putting in a component set of 5.25" speakers and tweeters or should I get pre-2013-2014 brackets and mount up some 6x8 coaxials?

I'm having a tough time finding 5.25" component speakers in 2 ohm. Any suggestions?

You will get better sound out of the comps. I'm looking myself. You're going to have to go high end, like Focal. Other than that, I know RE Audio, Image Dynamics, Infinity and maybe a couple other brands offer 2ohm speakers.

Thanks again. After that would be trying to piece together some 6x8 plate adapters to be able to mount up the 5.25" component speaker + tweeter. I have no idea if that will fit though.

I almost want to just get some 2010-2012 Ford Speaker mounts and put some 6x8 coaxials in there and be done with it. But again there's the dilemma of finding decent 2 ohm 6x8's. Everything out there seems to be 4 ohm.

If I put a 4 ohm speaker in there, what would the side effect be?

Many on here have done it, and had decent results. So they say. I haven't heard them, so I can't speak from a first person point of view. If you get really efficient 4ohm speakers, then the difference won't be night and day. 4ohm are a lot more common, and really open up your choices. All about efficiency though.

I'm planning to tear apart the factory 5.25 plates, the mid is just barely glued in. I'm going to cut out the grille on the plate, then open the tweeter hole up. That's just temporary though, as eventually I'll be making my own 5.25 adapter plate out of ABS and mounting the tweeter on the A-pillar - not until I get my amp/processor though, so it'll all be ran active (no passive crossover).

Sounds good. I think to keep things simple I'm going to put some simple 6x8 coaxials in and call it a day.

I've narrowed it down to the JBL® GTO 8629 (3 ohm) and the JL Audio C2-570X (4 ohm). Since I know next to nothing about this stuff, could you tell me which would be best to use?

I just put the JBL GTO 8628's in mine, they sound pretty good for the money and they are 2 ohm.

What made you decide on those two? Between the two, I'd do the JBLs. JBLs have always had decent tweeters. JL tweeters suck. Infinity tweeters are harsh (typically).

Though if you're just going to do coaxials, I'd probably do one of the Pioneer TS line.

I came across those searching through various reviews from Mustang owners looking to upgrade their speakers. The JL's had a lot of good reviews, but I actually was leaning towards the JBL's. Originally I wanted to go with Infinity Kappa's but have also heard that they have a harsh sound to them. I have read many Mustang owners have gone with the Pioneer's but I read some reviews where some owners found better sounding speakers from different manufacturers.

Thanks Siber Express, I will check into the JBL GTO 8628's. I suppose they would be the best choice since they are 2 ohm just like the factory speakers?

So after much back/forth debating I pulled the trigger on the speaker swap setup for my 2014 Premium with Shaker system.

I went with the JBL GTO8628 2 ohm 6x8 coaxials, Pre 13'-14' Ford speaker brackets 4R3Z 18B947 AA and 4R3Z 18B947 BA from Tasca Ford, and Ford speaker harness adapters from Crutchfield.

$52.95 for the speakers from Sonic Electronix
$33.16 for the speaker brackets
$12.99 for the harness adapters

Grand total: $99.10

I'll report back after I get them installed. Thanks again for your guidance, laserred38

I will be watching this too, I want to upgrade my stock door and rears. Maybe add a stealth sub after a HU swap.

I have a set for the rear also, just have not taken the back of the car apart to put them in yet.

I bought my first component for my audio build today. Went over to my old forum, caraudio.com/forum, to peruse the classifieds. Found a guy selling a pair of Hertz High Energy HV 200 8" mids for $150. He happened to be in central CA, asked him to meet me halfway to save shipping. He just happened to be coming up my way, today, so we met at the mall and now I have new 8s lol. I haven't installed yet, as I want to address the speakers and sound deadening first, not to mention I don't know if I'll have 3.5" of depth to work with, but either way I'll make them work. I can't wait to get them hooked up! These are very rare drivers. I don't ever remember them being available. When I was working at the shop, we never used them, so I think I scored some gems!
