Plsti Dip question

What's the trick for taping off an area, and then lifting the tape, without lifting the PD? Do you only put on one coat, then lift the tape while it's still wet?

Any time you peel away masking tape you have to pull it at a sharp angle away from the line of the paint.

But almost nothing will keep the paint/plastidip from lifting if it doesn't have good adhesion to the painted surface.

How did you prep the surface you were coating with the plastidip?

After putting on several layers and letting them dry between each one, I'll do a quick final spray along the edge to get it wet and it comes off clean and sharp.

It was told somewhere that **IMMEDIATELY** after spraying the Dip, you have to get that tape off, or it will make one cohesive surface over the tape and the part you're spraying. A clean line is impossible due to the way the Dip works unless you lift the tape while the Dip is still wet. If you do it while the Dip is dry, then you've made a plastic skin over both the tape and the part. Unless you score the Dip where you wanted it to be taped after the Dip hardens, the plastic will just rip as it wants to, and your part will look ugly.

There will be no way to 'prep' the part beyond a cleaning of it, otherwise, you're trying to make it duller than gloss so it'll stick better. Unless you are never, ever going to take the plastidip off, don't do this.

And by the same token, if you're never, ever going to take off the plastidip... why not use actual paint and prep the part and paint like normal? Just a thought...

Good luck!

No matter what, the part being coated needs some sort of prep, even if it just cleaning and removing any wax or other coating, otherwise there is no point doing the plastidip.

You can lay down several layers, just make sure on your last one that you remove the tape immediately. If you allow it to dry the PD will will rip when removing the tape.
