New hood, how to paint

Ok so what's the process with new hoods? Do you just get the hood painted or do they have to do blending on areas around the car?

if they can't match the paint perfectly then they will have to blend. I went to 4 places recently for estimates to have my hood painted and all 4 said they would have to blend. 6 yr old paint tho.

I see. Mine is a 13 so I'm hoping they can just paint the hood then.

How much would this cost me? I am assuming around 300, but I'm hoping for less.

You probably won't have to blend on a brand new car, especially Race Red since it's non metallic. You really only need to blend on metallic/pearl/faded paint, as Glenn suggested.

my quotes were 800 for both sides and 400 for one side. Lots of block sanding. its a new piece not something that just has to be repainted.

Wow, that's more than the hood itself! I hope I can find it cheaper than that, or maybe I can just do one side.

Yeah I see that. I'm sure it'll be worth it though. Is there any prep work I could do myself?

#1. What hod did you get and who did you get it from? Reason I asked is cause Cervinis puts a really nice gel coat on their hoods which bodyshop love cause it makes prepping easier.

#2. Are you planning on painting the top and bottom!? When I had my CobraR hood painted form Cervinis the gel coat was a gloss white which almost matched the stock white perfect, so I only had the body shop paint the top and left the bottom gel coat!

It's the trufiber hood in this pic but its fiberglass. It's got a gel coat over it, but my car is red so It might look weird to leave the underside un painted.

I paid $430 to have mine painted on both sides. They didn't have to blend, they color matched it perfectly. Paint on hood is better than factory! Owner did cut me a break on the price since we are both car enthusiasts; I drive a GT500 and my wife has a Roush, he drives a ZR1 and his wife has a ZL1.

Be sure to test fit it before painting it!!!!!! I didn't test fit my Steeda hood and ended up regretting it. Also, be sure the gel coat is/has been properly cured, didn't do this with my Steeda hood so the shop had to redo the whole hood.

You mean baking it right? Yeah I will test fit it first thing. I don't want any crazy gaps to deal with. I hope I can get my price down to 430, that's pretty reasonable.

Yeah $430 is a great price. I got a quote around $700 for one side. NE is expensive though.

Yes, baking it. I got lucky with the price, the owner is really cool.

cervini's states 5 days in the sun or bake at 140 degrees for one hour. I called them and told the the weather wasn't all that warm around here. He stated just leave it in the sun longer then. The heat from the engine helps too. I drove with the hood on for at least 7 days plus I had it in a oven at 125 degrees for about 2.5 hours.

Ok so just rock it without paint on my car for 7 days? I live in miami so I should be good with the heat.
