First Time Plastdipping.....kinda ****ty
First Time Plastdipping.....kinda ****ty
I ve been wanting to plastidip my spoiler for a few weeks now and I finally decided to do it. I ve never plastidipped before and it came out kinda ****ty. From far it looks fine but up close you see the ****tyness. I think i ll redo it later and do lighter coats. I love the look it gives it though!
Anyone have any plasti dipping tips?
Thanks in advance

Looks pretty good here!

Not soo much here :/

That could be your problem. Preparation is the key to a good paint job. Prior to refinishing, after you remove the current plasti-dip, clean the entire surface with Mineral Spirits or plain alcohol. Do this twice, using clean, lint free cloths. The car wash most likely left a residue of detergent or wax on the spoiler. Hope this is helpful.

Did you plastidip your tail lights? Looks like it...if you're really in texas, you'd be best served by yanking those tinted things off before you're ticketed for them. The pictures alone are proof they're too dark and that's not my opinion, it's the opinion of a DPS officer. Besides all of that it's a hazard to drivers who can't see your brake lights. Just FYI.
No the taillights are covers. I have heard alot about them possibly giving me trouble with law enforcement. I actually got pulled over a couple of days ago by city police, during the day, and they didnt tell me anything about the covers. I m probably going to just take them off soon and put the trunk lid blackout. Are you a dps?
So I wouldn't mind trying the Plastidip thing on my wheels but cutting the tape off is gonna be tough. Can the tape be pulled before its dry? Gonna have to buy a can and test it first I'm thinking.
My buddy wants to do his hole truck with the large car kit that comes with spray gun, and 3 gallons of this ****..

If you do any kind of taping, you have to peel it up while still wet, otherwise it will cause terrible lines.
As far as the bubbling, if you're using the can, make sure to keep a steady speed going across to leave an even coat, and be a good distance away from the surface being sprayed. I stay about 6" away. I do light coats, give it plenty of time to dry before starting the next layer. It just takes lots of practice.
Also, to the tail light situation, I am working on a cool plasti dip solution.....
'13 style tails on the '10-'12. If I get enough people liking it, I might be making them into a vinyl piece to put on.

I had trouble doing my faux gas cap as well. I would do light coats and by the 4th coat I get impatient and lay on too thick. It ends up looking and feeling like truckbed Liner lol. Also when I peel the tap from under the cap it pulls up the PLastidip off the edges.
I've seen guys tape it off in a square a few inches outside the faux cap (basically getting it on the deck lid) and then I guess cutting around the cap and peeling that other stuff off.
In guessing it takes practice

Of there is any kind of gap between surfaces ie from decklid to gas cap, it peels a straight line. No cutting necessary. This stuff is awesome, and there are wayyyy to many uses for it. Lol
If you're worried about it peeling when pulling the tape, use this technique....
Spray after done spraying count to 10, then pull all tape. Try and pull at an angle away from the part sprayed, it will leave a cleaner line. Just do not let it dry before pulling tape or you just wasted a lot of time.

I don't know if I'm misunderstanding, but you don't need to tape off anything for your rims....it's best to pull the rims and do the inside and out, tire sidewalls and all. If you don't like it on the sidewalls it will peel off in one piece and not mess up the wheel finish, just make sure it's dry. The more you spray the easier it peels... And don't worry to much about prep, just make sure the wheels aren't covered in dirt...
