Custom Splitter

I want to put a splitter on my car, and due to the 3d carbon front fascia, I'm thinking' I need to make a custom one.

I'm considering either 3/16 abs, or 1/8 aluminum. They cost about the same, so that's not a factor.

Has anyone else done this? Got any advice?

Yep. That's what I was gonna do. I suspect the ABS would be much lighter than the aluminum. I was also considering a carbon-fiber vinyl wrap, but being out front and low to the ground, I have to question the durability of the vinyl.

The guy in the article you cited used 1/4-inch ABS, but that seems awful thick to me.

To me the splitter in the article is too thick and sticks out too far and quite frankly looks homemade.
It might be a good starting point but I would not copy it.

That was the approach I was going to take, but mine would look different, and I have an idea to replace the typically seen support struts.

I found a local source for the ABS sheet. Gonna cost $85 for the sheet at 65x30x1/4 inches.

I'll be picking it up this weekend.

you want it to be at least 1/4" ABS to prevent/minimize deformation. Sounds like you're on the right track, good luck and post up the result!

Got the ABS sheet - it's textured on one side. Should I put the the texture side up, or the smooth side?

BTW, the total cost was $91 (including tax) for a 72x24x1/4 sheet and four 1-1/2 x 12 x 1/2 support pieces.

Sintra is the stuff to use. It is PVC plastic but in a foam. the sides are smoothish like a matt finish. 1/4" Sintra weighs less than 1/8" ABS and it is stiffer too. It works like wood. Come in black so you can just sand the edges smooth and seal with some clear if you're inclined doesn't need it.

Did you make your own splitter? Got any pictures/write-ups of your process?

I'm wondering if I have to reinforce the front fascia where the splitter will be attached with backing plates. If so, I was thinking of using 1/16-inch aluminum.

I used tee nuts on top of the valance and flat head bolts on the bottom. I also ran the splitter all the way back to the radiator support eliminating all the other plastic under the front. I ran this for about a year then went a much bigger carbon fiber splitter. I don't have any process pictures of that first splitter.

Yeah, I know about those guys, but wow - starting at $400. So far, I have $90 tied up in mine. My front fascia is not flat, so I have to come up with some kind of support for the center section. I have a few ideas for that.

I'm not sure how strong the plastic is that makes up the front fascia, either, so I'm thinking I might need to reinforce it on the inside.

You forgot to add the most important thing - it's **** cheap! a 70 x 24 x 1/4 sheet is only $25.

It took a couple of days, but I finally found a place that sells it in sheets that big.

Gotta wait till next week to get it because they're not open on Saturdays.
