Hmm... I think I'm the first one to do a projector retrofit on a 2010 Mustang... So here are some pics.

This took me about two days of working on and off and waiting for nightfall to check progress.

FX-R Projectors w/ clear lenses (theretrofitsource.com)
Gatling Gun Shrouds (TRFS)
35w DDM Tuning 1st Generation "Raptor" Ballasts (Had them laying around/DDM)
6000 K(elvin) D2S HID bulbs (Apexcone/DDM)
Duplicolor Black Trim Paint (Paintscratch.com)
Colormatched L6 Kona Blue Paint (Paintscratch.com)
Red LED "demon eyes" (Oznium.com)

I had left over gutter guard wire mesh from a roof install a few years back, so I used that for the foglight delete; they're a wire mesh that is coated with black paint... I believe Lowe's or Home Depot only sell the plastic mesh style...

Hmm I think you shoulda kept the chrome trim that surrounds the reflector. But looks good. Back when I was in the market I was going to order my car with the factory HIDs, then pick up a set of the OEM non-HID housings and swap the projectors in...

I think the if you're going to go through all that work I'd have done what you did left the none functional reflector out. I wish I could see inside the housing better is it closed or can you see around the lamp? I like the older after market conversion where there was two projectors. That housing overall is just too big for the one little light. I don't care for most headlight designs these days. I don't like chrome so they have these huge covers covering a quarter or more of the fender one or two little projector lenses and acres of chrome for no reason.

 

What do you mean? For the turn signal? or the original halogen reflector bowl?

The original halogen reflector bowl, I would have left it chrome (would look more OEM to me, but I like OEM look...this looks more custom...different strokes for different folks ). I like the amber removed though.

 

Ahh.. yah, I was contemplating leaving the reflector bowl alone, but the only chrome I have on my car is the exhaust tips... =P I have't grown out of the "blacked out" look yet...

Thanks. I was either going to smoke them a dark color or remove them... Removing them yielded more light output > getting (almost) run off the road (again) by a driver who doesn't check twice before switching lanes.

 

For those wanting to see the reflector bowl chrome, please be aware that leaving it chrome can result in patches of light being reflected off the projector...it can result in a stray area of light above the cut-off line. Trust me, I know from experience because I too like the stock look Going with a bigger shroud (like the Apollo aka Cayenne) can usually prevent it, but it looks terrible if you end up with scatter!

I've had four retrofits done on trucks, and was thinking about doing it for the Mustang. I skipped the factory HID option because I don't like the projector placement, and once I saw the cut-off, I was totally disinterested even though I also don't like the idea of getting too deep in this car. Retrofits definitely look much better on 2010+ cars. On the 05-09, I think it was too easy for the car to end up bug-eyed!

I think it looks great with the chrome painted, nice job! Can I see the housings during the day? I'm not a huge fan of the gatling gun shroud or accessory lights (just personal preference even though I've done halos before ), but I think overall your retrofit came out really nicely!

Reflections shouldn't pose a problem as long as you bondo/seal all the light leaks anywhere behind the shroud. I went this route because no one had a pic of the factory cut-off; oh well, problem solved.

Also, I DO NOT recommend Gatling shrouds... They're wayyyy too big for the 2010 housings... I might be going w/ the Ocular shrouds soon...

 

so did you bake them in the oven and then open them. or did you just cut them to open them?

 

Looks good. Not a fan of the red LEDs, they cheapen all the hard work you have put into it.

How much did all the parts cost?

 

Ok that looks pretty good. You should do the CS lower, then that car will look even meaner!

 

+1, they look out of place. I would have went with some cool white LEDs or a CCFL halo for effect lighting personally.

 

I tried to bake them, but the epoxy sealant that Ford uses has a higher melting point than the plastic housing itself so I ended up taking a dremel to it... But that was just my headlight; if you embark on your own retrofit, try throwing yours in your oven first...

Yeah, it sounded like a cool idea w/ the gatling shrouds, but I'm starting to dislike it...

I was thinking a dark blue to match the color of my car... I honestly hate halo lights; so many cars have those now, not including the BMWs- but the Audi LED strips are starting to catch on too...

Looks good man glad to see someone else do it the right way. You were close to being the first but I did mine back in october http://www.allfordmustangs.com/forum...eadlights.html . I used the morimotos and gatling gun shrouds. You are the first 2010 though as mine is a 2011. Nice write up I didn't take the time to take pictures.

My gatling shrouds didn't fit without trimming using the FX-R's... =[

btw, how did you get the housings open? Dremel? Bake? another secret? lol
