What gears should I get?

I currently have 2.73 in my car right now. I'm looking for something that will give me more of that initial pull when I give it some gas, while not destroying my gas mileage during my commute.

Keep in mind that is my DD and it will never see a track.

Thanks

exactly what I was gonna say. There won't be enough difference with 3.31's to make it worth the money, and 3.73's will cause a decent drop in hwy mpg so 3.55 is your only option. Keep in mind, any gear swap is going to affect your mileage negatively going from 2.73s

Just what the car is rated for. Personally, I can't keep my foot out of the gas thru town and I still manage 16 in town. Better than my trucks hwy mpg

ahhh. Yeah, I believe that rating is for the 3.31 on the 5.0 but still funny how bad trucks can be on gas =/

My old sport trac couldn't even crack 20 hwy with a v6

****.. My 06 f150 was rated for 19 hwy, but with a lift and bigger tires gets about 12-14 on a perfect day on cruise ctrl.

Is there much of a difference between 3.73 and 3.55 other than murdering mpgs?

They won't be THAT much worse, at least not as bad as the 4.10s

let me change my question. Is the performance increase worth the fewer mpgs? Also, I drive stick, so would 3.73 be a pain in the *** shifting all the time?

You'll notice a difference. Won't be huge, but a lil bit more pep

Sorry, the diff between 2.73 and 3.31 is HUGE with the V6, compared to the diff between 3.31 and 3.55... What are some people smoking, I'll send you my addy, and a calculator too.

Yeah, but it's not a big enough change to justify spending $600+......It is the same price to go to any gear, so why not go at least 3.55 which wasn't a factory option??

I'd be going from 2.73 to 3.73, or 2.73 to 3.55

I'm going to throw the wrench in the works. IMO, the only options are 2.73 for economy, 3.31 for added performance and 3.73s for performance. I get over 28.5 mpg with 3.73 gears if I can stay under 75mph on the highway. I used to get about 30.5mpg with 3.31s.

V6 with 3.31 gears will get 30 mpg + all day long on the interstate. 70 mph right at 2000 rpm, and it does not take long to get up to the 70 mark, either!

I'm going to have 3:55 installed on my 11 v6. I think that's a great gear for someone who is not track racing and wants a little more throw back than 3:31 gears.
