Tremec Magnum XL

My MT-82 and clutch are both on borrowed time so I've decided to spend the $$$ and go with the Tremec. My question is which gears to go with? It comes in two choices:
2.66:1st 1.78:2nd 1.30:3rd 1.00:4th 0.74:5th 0.50:6th
2.97:1st 2.07:2nd 1.43:3rd 1.00:4th 0.80:5th 0.62:6th
Compared to the MT-82 which has:
3.66:1st 2.43:2nd 1.69:3rd 1.32:4th 1.00:5th 0.65:6th

Anyone gone with the Tremec and which gears did you go with?

Looks like, to me, the 'stock' configurations of the XL suck for the 5.0. For the street, anyway. Suck launches. Potentially better rev matching for speeds OR less rowing about, but not both. MPG improvement in cruise on one set.

It's really looks more like a racing transmission. Honestly, I might pass if I couldn't get something better for the gearing, but then, I'm not truly an expert, and it's really YOUR driving experience that will dictate what you need/want.

You want worse launching, but close to stock, get the XL in the close ratio. You'll be changing gears faster though. You want even worse launching but better gas mileage, get the wide ratio, and enjoy a little less frantic rowing about. In both cases, though, with fourth being 1:1, you get two overdrives. Which means there's one less gear in the power gears to choose from. Which means you'll be sticking in a gear where you might be shifting to a better one in the MT-82.

So... I'm thinking that if it were me, I'd stick with the MT-82 setup. And so if Tremec can build me an XL with not so much drop off in 1st, and move the ranges around to get them more like the MT-82, then that's what I'd get them to build.

But that's me. If you're doing something else, wanting something else, you might wanna have a conversation with Tremec directly regarding what they can do, because they can and will build you a gear set for what you want.. and already have. Remember, you got that rear gear set to think about, that enters the equation.

Think about how you drive the car now. And then what these gears will do to that. The lower first, shorter ratios to 1.00, a second overdrive... these are interesting choices. And they will affect how the car works. Do you want more gears before 1:1? Or do you want an extra overdrive? Do you want it to chug in 6th potentially?

Also, it's been reported that this swap with the stock XL gears will make a rear gear swap semi-mandatory, due to heat or whatever, but I can't really speak upon that.

Not to promote other sites, but maybe this will help, it's a nice discussion about this very thing:

Good luck!

Perhaps you can go with numerically higher ratio, and get 4:10 rear end?

How happy are you with the gearing in the MT 82? If you had a stock engine than either of the Tremec ratios would result in a noticeable loss in acceleration. However since you're supercharged you probably have far more power [ even allowing for the typical overly optimistic correction factor used by the performance industry ] than any normal street tire can cope with now, especially with 3.73 rearend gears. Currently your overall ratios with the MT 82 & 3.73's give you ratios of 1st.= 13.65, 2nd.=9,06, 3rd.=6.12, 4th.=4.92, 5th.=3.73, 6th.=2.42. Using the closer ratio 2.66 you have overall gearing of 1st.= 9.92, 2nd.=6.64, 3rd.=4.85, 4th.=3.73, 5th.= 2.76, 6th.= 1.87. Finally using the wider ratio 2.97 you have overall gearing of 1st.=11.08, 2nd.=7.72, 3rd.=5.33, 4th.=3.73, 5th.=2.98, 6th.=2.31. If you generally like your present gearing I think the wider ratio 2.97 1st. gear will come closer to what you have now. For what it's worth the Mt 82 with a standard 3.31 rear gives an overall ratio of 12.11 in first and even stock engines with 3.31 gears still seem to give pretty good acceleration. With supercharging I am pretty sure you'll be OK with the 11.08 of the 2.97 Tremec.

Thanks for the opinions everyone, lots to think about. I'm not concerned with fuel mileage or the overdrive gears, rarely use 6th now. I have very limited traction in 1st and 2nd, I launch at 1800rpm and have to keep it at half throttle through first and second or I just spin. Do you think I might be able to get faster 1/4 mile times if I went with the 2.66's?
Thanks for the link Houtex, I read everything I could find but never came across that.
I definitely don't want to end up swapping rearend gears so I'm kinda iffy on going with the 2.66's.
