Need help choosing an exhaust

I've been scouring the forums, YouTube and Internet, but I still need some help choosing an exhaust for my 2011 5.0 GT since I'm totally new to it.

From what I've read, it seems that Borla may be the way to go, but I'm open to any suggestions. I'm particularly interested in the ATAK system so far...

I really want a nice sounding exhaust that gives the car more presence when driving around. Loud and throaty is ok, but I still want to hear the radio and of course wish to avoid drone.

My limitations are that I live in Japan and shipping is really expensive. I was thinking that just the rear section might be enough? Do I need an X-pipe or catback? Also, the upgrade will need to be reversed every 3 years for the Japanese car inspection. Can the original exhaust be replaced for a short time?

I should also mention that my car is an automatic transmission. Gasp! I know, I know... But that's the only way Ford sells the Mustang in Japan...

Any help or reccomendations would be much appreciated!
Thanks!

I drive an automatic. As soon as I got home from buying it, I ordered my 40 Series FlowMasters. I'm just a FM guy. As soon as I hit button that ordered them, I wish I would have bought the Roush axle-back set.

For the record, I'm very happy with my Flows!

Borla makes a great exhaust and there is zero drone. I would say get the ATAK axle back. It's still really loud at WOT but you can barely hear it while cruising on the highway.

I've heard flowmasters drone. Perhaps someone else can input there. Magnaflows drone as well.

Borla and corsa advertise all their exhausts without drone. I think one of those would be your best bet. I have borla stype catback and I love it. The axle backs are kinda pricey but it would be very easy to install and remove yourself. The catback will need a lift to do that. Plus shipping for an axle back would be much less.

I'd say given your situation, I'd stick with the Borla ATAK axle back. They provide a great sound with no drone and wouldn't be difficult to remove and replace with the stock setup when needed.

I'm running the ATAK catback right now and I couldn't be happier... My magnaflows on my 05 were SO annoying. I don't think I'll ever buy from anyone except Borla in the future. Such a well made, great sounding, perfect fitting product with no drone whatsoever. The s-type and the ATAK both sound flawless. For your situation, an axle back may be the best option for now...

I have Stainless Works cat back on my Cali and love it. It is a little pricey but the sound and quality is top notch. I listened to every brand imaginable and chose Stainless Works. My second choice would have been Borla Atak, but it was even more $$ then the Stainless Works.

Thanks everybody for the great advise! I totally appreciate it!

Some of you have mentioned the ATAK axle back... I feel silly asking, but it is it this one?

Yes, thats the ATAK axle back. Like I said in my earlier post, given your situation, that's probably your best option. While pricey, it's worth every penny. No drone at all and amazing sound. Very good product.

I spent a few months debating the same topic for my 2012 5.0. Borla ATAK was too loud at WOT and I like the Touring but it was too subdued. I went with the Flowmaster Hushpower and love the deep, throaty tone of the exhaust. Axle back is all you need IMO and make a huge difference in the personality of the car. I love my FM Hushpower but also think highly of the Borla Touring.

I had a huge debate with the Bassani's or the the Roush AB's. The Bassani's had a lot of complaints of drone, so it was a no on those. I was able to snag the Roush AB's for a great price and I have loved them every since. There has been nothing but compliments on the exhaust from everyone that's heard it in person and I've lost count of the people that turn when I'm come roaring through

Here a couple of my videos:

Good luck on your decision!!

Few words of advice on the subject of exhaust.

Check out my signature as I've compiled tons of YouTube video's of setup's for the 5.0. Additionally I highly recommend using a very good set of headphones that can give bass because otherwise when you watch and listen to the video's you won't accurately represent the actual sound. Video's won't be a 100% accurate representation of the sound versus hearing it in person, but it won't be a far cry from it.

Exhaust is a very personal choice and what others like you may not like and in the end what you get may not be what everyone else likes. Aside from the cost aspect, tone and volume are the important personal taste sound qualities you want to choose from. Additionally research drone from that particular brand. Some people like it, some people don't. Corsa and Roush are my personal favorites.

Stangpilot007,
I checked out Mustang CliQ and really like your page!
If you don't mind, I'd like to link to it from my Minkara page in Japan.
Minkara is like Facebook, but for cars!
You don't mind a little extra traffic do you?

I took forever to decide and ended up with roush's. They are absolutely amazing and no drone. I don't even think ill have to change to an X pipe. They sound great and from 3-4000 is incredible.

+1.
I have the same setup. Great sound, and it really wakes up when you get on it. I love driving by barriers, large walls and under bridges. I watch all the other drivers turning their heads looking for the muscle car.

Roush. Save a ton of dough, get a great sound. If you don't ever plan to go with a full setup to get better power gains, then Roush is a no brainer.
