Talking My GT500 muffler project - flat black tips

I finally received the GT500 mufflers today, and promptly ran out to get some 400-grit sand paper and some high-temp flat-black spray paint.

Got home, roughed up the fresh finish on those beautiful mufflers and proceeded to spray the hell out of the tips and the back panel of the mufflers, to get them blacked out

Some pics to show the progress :

(the mufflers are due to be installed some time this weekend or Monday at the latest, weather permitting )

Should have left the tips polished

I just (1 hour ago) had Flowmasters American Thunder Axlebacks installed. They are black with polished tips

All dry, waiting to be installed :

I love how they came out.

The install will have to wait possibly till Monday or so, since the girlfriend's daughter is back with us as of today (she was with her Daddy for the summer), and this weekend is dedicated to spending time with both of them

If you like the black tips look at the Corsa Black Diamond tips.

One thing to consider before installing them - paint the entire muffler can before installing them on the car. Basically walk around your car, even crouch down a little, and look and see where you can get glimpses of the existing cans and you'll see that painting the whole thing is worth a little extra effort. I was glad I did it. Granted 90% of the benefit is from painting the rear face of them but there are places like looking at the wheel well opening where you can see the muffler and having it black really helps it to disappear.

Thanks guys.

As far as painting the whole muffler ... I only wanted them to blend in from the rear ... looking at the rear wheel well I expect to still see the exhaust pipe and the front of the muffler, I guess ... I'm not gonna do the muffler and still see the pipe ... I'd then have to also paint the pipe and where do I stop then? Paint everything else that's not black? lol

I'm thinking that IF I can still see non-painted parts of the mufflers from the rear or rear/side, then I can always get under the car and spray paint the parts that can still be seen, but until then, I'm done.

It's looking like I may get to install them this afternoon ... we'll see.

Once installed, I'll have updated pics from all sorts of angles

Well, they're installed, they look just like I expected / wanted, and they sound awesome and give off awesome burble while letting off the gas in gear ...

Exactly what I wanted !!

Going out for a drive now with the GF and her daughter, will upload the pics when we get back ...

So they're finally installed. I'm super-happy with the sound and burble

The first 2 pictures show the driver side original 5.0 muffler and the new GT500 muffler to show the size difference of the tips.

This pic shows the bracket above the passenger side muffler (there's a similar one on the driver side, with 2 bolts on the side, not just one, like this one).
I took this pic to show how hard it is to get to the bolt right above the muffler.
There's almost no space there, and this bolt on each side gave me quite a headache.

And while I was under the car I figured I'd take a pic of the sweet-looking cover on that Torsen rear diff

I'm not planning on doing that anytime soon.
My last car, the '07 Charger R/T, had full exhaust, headers, high-flow cats, and cat-back, all from JBA, and it was was too loud for any kind of family usage ...
I'm not planning on making the Mustang any louder ... this is now perfect for me.

Resonator removal makes it a bit deeper and more rumble. The loudness is only at hard throttle or downshifting which makes it perfect for a daily driver/family car.

Black tips are not my thing....maybe on a different color. In the pics, it looks like it is an attempt to match the car even though I know better. Maybe it is better in person....but it is what you like that counts.
