Let's Talk Tunes!
Let's Talk Tunes!
I now have a 2012 5.0 GT Ragtop with an auto tranny and am thinking about a tune. And yes, I have read about Ford not willing to honor warranty claims if a tune is discovered to have been put on the car. And I have also read about cylinder #8 and the damage with over aggressive tunes with the engine timing advanced too far....
I talked to the dealer where I bought it and they said for a "safe" tune for the car, go with the tune that JDM Engineering offers. I actually have a newer SCT programmer that I had a tune on for the 08 GT I had and it will work with the newer Mustangs if I get a new tune of course.
I called Jim at JDM and asked him if I could get 3 tunes for the new Mustang that I have that would be safe. He laughed about me wanting 3 tunes. He explained that only 1 tune is needed and that they utilize the Mustang's computer to adjust the engine timing as needed for different octanes of gas used like it does stock. He said this way, with the tune they offer, the timing is advanced (however not too much as to cause damage to the engine) and that way if you get some bad gas with a lower octane than rated, the engine will compensate for it by reducing the timing. With the 93 octane tune from other tuners as an example, the engine will not compensate for a lower octane gas if I understood him correctly.
I talked with him for 20 minutes on the phone and I believe this guy is 100% correct. He said he also use to work for Ford. I have ordered a new Airaid CAI and will run it with the insert (for no tune applications) and when I get some miles on the new Mustang, I will add his tune.
He also explained how the automatic transmissions shift to me and explained how they set up tunes for them. He took the time to explain everything to me and I am very impressed!
Any of you have a tune from Jim at JDM Engineering and if so, how do you like it?
Thanks,
Phil

My tune is from another Jersey native, Dwayne at Big Daddy Performance, however, growing up right near JDM I can tell you it he does quality work. He did some work on my SVT focus a couple years back and I was impressed. He also has some of the sickest lightnings I have ever seen--several street-driven, 10sec trucks.

I have a JDM tune, though my car is an 07 5 speed with a Roush supercharger. JDM knows their stuff! Completely satisfied with the JDM tune that they wrote for my car. I can tell you, from reading some of the Roush forums, that JDM seems to be the ONLY company, that can write a correct tune for supercharged cars with auto transmissions. Folks who have used other tuners for their auto trans cars all seem to have problems....90% of them eventually go to JDM for a new tune that resolves the problems from the other tuners.
I would keep in mind that only the dealership that directed you to JDM is going to be willing to honor any warranty work. Another dealer is most likely going to void it since JDM is obviously a third party tune.
Not sure if you care about the warranty, just pointing it out. Also if something major needs repaired a Ford FSE would get involved and they would most likely also not be pro JDM tuning.

Get the tune. It will make a good running car much better and more enjoyable to drive. With the weather getting colder where I'm at I'm having a ball lighting up the tires on the 1-2 shift at about half throttle.
Yes it's an auto...

Do you have a JDM Engineering tune as well?
Thanks,
Phil
I have a JDM tune in my 2010 and have no complaints about it. Only thing I dislike is when you go into a store for a few minutes and than go start it back up, it will hold the rpm's higher (like a cold start) for about 20 sec's, than idle normal.
Understand. The plan is to run it w/o a tune for a while and have the tune put on the SCT programmer (that I already have) so when the warranty is up, I can load it if I want to, or sooner if I decide to. At almost $45,XXX dollars, I would hate to have any warranty issues. However you only live once too and at 57, I am not getting any younger.....
Thanks,
Phil

Hey! I'm 57 and my wife says when I am driving my Mustang it makes me act like I am 19 again. So I must be getting younger. I think that tune will take 5 years off of your age.

Seriously, if anything, it does make me feel younger when I drive the Mustang!!!

Cool. Gus and team are good people! Steeda makes high quality products too!
BTW, I am in Rochester just a bit south of you. May have to hook up in the spring for a soda if you want. When the wife and I are driving around we get up your way sometimes and also like to head up to 4 Winds Casino! Excellent big juicy cheeseburgers served at the Timbers Deli there!

Gettin ready to put the new Mustang in the shop for winter real soon....dang it!

Phil

I installed my Jon Lund/Evolution tune last Friday. It's like having a new car. I hated the hesitation I had and stock. The throttle response alone is amazing! Besides that, the power gain is impressive. No regrets! I would read as many posts as possible and go with the company you feel is best suits your needs in the end. I'm very happy with my tune but the Bama/American Muscle tune offers some sort of warranty and you can never go wrong with Steeda!

Phil. You will do better with a custom dyno tune. I personally don't trust mail order tunes. Even with data logging. I would ask the tuner about your concerns with factory warranty issues. There is always a trick around these things. A good dyno tuner will have the answers you need.
