Illinois emissions

I was about to pull the trigger on long tubes and x pipe as my next mod, but then I found out that Illinois has emissions testing. I do not currently live there, but will be going there for college. I plan on living off campus for the first year so I believe I would have to switch my residence. I noticed this kit http://www.brenspeed.com/2011kooks.html on Brenspeed includes an O2 extension harness. Would this allow me to pass emissions? If not, could the car be custom tuned so there will be no red flags when trying to pass?

First off not all counties in Illinois require emission testing, I live in Will County and it isn't required.
Where are you planning to go to school? Look up the county of the school you plan to attend and check with them to see if they require it.
As far as the headers you had listed it looks like it included the cats so I would assume that it would pass the test

The link below should help you also

What's already done to your vehicle, because headers would be the last mod I did, if I was going to do headers?

Only CAI and tune right now. Bought it used and it already had the 3.73 gear option.

Much of Will county is included in the emissions area.

For a 1996 or newer car all that will be done is to plug in the OBD2 and look for codes.

I believe the IM240 equipment has been removed from the stations.

I agree. I live in Will county as well. 1996 and newer autos are tested for emissions codes only.

They just plug you in. As long as all your sensors are "ready" and there are no codes, you pass.

no visual inspection just plug in. I failed becuse sensors not ready on mine. The correct tune should get you a pass. I don't think you should have to change your address for school. I wouldn't anyway.

The o2 sensor extensions have nothing to do with emissions and should never ever ever be used. Period.

what if the cords don't reach after you install your long tubes?? How would you plug them in without the extensions?

They'll reach. Just unclip the harness at the top on the transmission and you'll get all the length you need. If your headers come with the o2 extensions just throw them in the trash.

If you are going to college there you do not have to get tagged or inspected there. I had Oklahoma tags(no inspection or front tag) for 3 years in Texas while going to college. You just have to say you have intentions of returning to the home state after graduating.

You dont want out-of-state plates around Chicago. The cops will stop you just for the fun of it. Remember that most people who get a ticket out of state, plead guilty and pay rather that going to court. So you are more likely to get ticketed.
The Emmisions techs dont try to fail you, if your OBD and your gas cap passes, you PASS. They have no interest in failing you w/ a visual inspection. If you fail 3 times they will suspend your license(not just your registration), so dont FAIL.

Ok that's what I was sort of wondering if I could get away with leaving it registered in Michigan even if I rent an apartment. If you're from Chicago hows the insurance there? I'm worried about registering it in a large city at my age.

Uh...not sure if that's really the case - they say the same thing about NYPD + LAPD. And a lot of states have database relationships that allow violations to roam state to state with the driver...

OP - just pay attention and don't do anything stupid. Chicagoland is a car town and you'll have a great time with a GT there (except when it snows ). I wouldn't change residences just for school unless I planned on staying. Heck I know people still on their parents plates/insurance from other states...

Thanks for this thread. I have another reason to be glad I moved out of Illinois. I grew up in Kankakee.

Sorry to revive the old thread but I bought a boss 302 side exhaust and before I install it I was wondering does Illinois (Chicago area specifically) also have restrictions for noise as well as emissions?
