Do you think I'll need a re-tune for the speedometer, or the overall diameter change is small enough so that I can get away without one?

 

You might need to have the dealer reset it. The difference in height is almost an inch (0.7")...

Why not sell your existing tires? I have 38,800 on my Pirelli all-seasons and probably will get to 40,000-42,000 before replacement.

all the way around.I want to leave the stock size in the front(245/45/19) but want a wider tire in the rear.. this is what is offered by Pirelli in same brand so i gues the 275/40/19 is my only other option..thoughts?..245/45/19 front rear 275/40/19 rear..will work or problem??

Hi Tony. Let's see, new tires (255/40) will run me $1000 installed. Boxing and shipping my 'used' tires (only 1k miles on them!) will run me $150. How much would you be willing to pay for them? How does $550 sound? They go for about $750 'new'.

Hey evlis - I'm not a tire expert, but I do have some knowledge. You can squeeze 275 on the rear of 8.5, but it would only improve your straight line (if you drag the car). But it would not be a good fit, with the sidewall bulging away from the rim, it would negatively affect daily driving and cornering. Tire Rack has a decent website for tire information. I have your exact wheels (I love the look), and I'm going to move to 255/40 19 all-around, with a summer performance tire, and I know I'll see improvement in all performance categories. My suggestion, move to another brand of tire, so you get the ideal size(s).

New Continental Extreme Contact DW 255/40 19 tires on my nickel wheels (2011 Mustang GT Premium). I thought the new size might have some negative issues (sidewall bulge, look small in wheel-well, vibration, speedometer, etc.). I'm happy to report that I have NONE of these issues. The tires look amazing on the nickel wheels (19 x 8.5), the steering response is quicker, and the feel is great. I'm very happy with my upgrade. Ford Country in Henderson Nevada was awesome, they price-matched the tires (Tire Rack), no shipping, mount & balance, and they recalibrated my speedometer and TPMS. Total price out the door was $1150. I highly recommend this tire size upgrade to anyone with nickel wheels (obviously not for cold and snow). And to be extra nice, Ford slapped on my Shelby GT 500 axle-back mufflers for free! The car is perfect now!
