Hey guys,

I'm due for a new set of tires and am currently weighing my options on three different tire sizes:

255/40/19 (stock) 27" tall
275/40/19 27.7" tall
275/35/19 26.6" tall

I am planning on running a square setup and keep in mind I have a 3.73 gear. I value handling more than straight line acceleration if that helps any.

With the 275/40's I'm worried that the tire might be too tall. I know I should have more ultimate grip than stock, all things equal, but I'm wondering if the 40's will look too beefy or have too much sidewall squirm. I do know I'd benefit with a higher effective gear ratio... I'd probably be able to run through the 1/4 in 4th gear without hitting the limiter.

With the 275/35's I would have an effectively lower gear ratio, but I'd probably pick up some more of that turn-in feel lost with the 275/40. Just worried that maybe this might be too short of a tire, and with my already low 3.73 gear if I'd negate any real gains in straight line grip with the lower effective ratio.

And of course I could remain at stock tire sizes at the (potential) expense of less outright grip.

Thoughts?

I'd go with the 275/35. I'm running 285/35/18's which are 25.85" tall. The 275/35/19 is much taller than mine. I am lowered, so it doesn't look awkward, and you're not going to be able to tell much difference in the effective lower gearing since your change is so small. A great performance/tread life tire in 275/35/19 is the Hankook V12.

Thanks for the input. Re: the V12s, they are not a bad tire. I had them on my 370Z before but I think the sidewalls are a little too squishy for me to use them again.

I think I am going to go with the Michelin Pilot Super Sports, in which case I am limited to 275/35. The only other option would be the Continental ExtremeContact DW's in either OEM size or 275/35 or 275/40... but the PSSs outclass them in every category.

I'd go with the PSS's. Outdoes every performance tire on the market right now. All the reviews I've seen are 9+ on a scale to 10. I'd go with the 275/35's. That's actually the same set up I'm going to be doing. If you decide on them, let us know how they perform.

I will definitely let you know. I need to make a couple big decisions about the car first. If I don't think I am going to hang onto it much longer I will probably get the V12s. If I think I will keep it I will get the PSS.

hmm, subscribing to this one. keep us posted. i was running the gt500 wheels w/285s out back on my 09 and loved em...Im a fan of my brembo rims but the tire width limitations might force my hand to check out some forgestars....

I have a set of Brembo Wheels and went 255/40/19 on the front and 275/35/19 on the rear. Hankook Ventus all the way around. i had ambitions of using these as my track wheels....

I like the look of the Brembos but yes, they are very narrow and are ungodly heavy. The 19x9 and 19x10s from my 370 were just barely over 21 lbs each!

Anyways, I am leaning towards the PSS but kind of have my eye on the 2012 911 2S, so if that happens the Mustang has to go!

Any updates? I am in the market for tires now thanks to a nail in the sidewall of my pirelli's. I have almost 11,000 miles on the tires and I don't wanna replace just one with th emileage that far off. Was gonna do two but, my dealer wants $464 a tire (that includes road hazard and install). They sell tire for $5 over cost. Going over my options now. TIA

I actually think the Pirellis are a great tire. They have good feedback and tons of grip. The car was way faster on The Dragon than my 370Z was which is saying a lot.

The only downside is the cost and tread life.

I thought i was the only one feeling that these stock tires suck. During rain i feel like i'm on skates with only 15k miles on them.

Well they certainly aren't a good drag tire, but they have great lateral grip for handling.

Good man. PSS's are the way to go. Not a fan of the Pirelli's. Too loud, half the tread of the PSS's, very expensive.

Got the Hankooks. 275/40/19's. They look good. Price was definitely way better. I'll update on how they feel. I've only had a chance to put a few miles on them. They were fairly quiet on the highway coming home.
