Ford Racing Tune pinging

I have had the Ford racing tune in my 2014 5.0 for a few months now. Drive-ability improved and it has much more torque in the lower rpms. The only problem I am having is this pinging at mid range rpms, I don't feel comfortable flooring it. I called ford racing and I was not pleased with their service. They told me some pinging is normal, I can try a catch can to get rid of it. I highly doubt a catch will eliminate the pinging. I am really thinking of getting a tune from bama or similar, only reason I went with ford racing was because of their warranty. Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks

The stock tune pings, you just don't hear it.

And it does state on the FRPP website description that some pinging is normal.

It comes from the pcm always pushing the timing to the limit, especially on the FRPP tune.

A little bit won't hurt anything, would only be a problem if it happens all the time.

Try changing where you buy gas, go for the best you can find.

Pinging will hurt.....the power. This is known with the FRPP tunes. You really need to get a real tune from a tuner. Ditch the procal and get AED or VMP. When your car pings/knocks, the PCM will pull lots of timing causing the engine to be down on power. No need to deal with that.

What?
If it is pinging you will hear it. That is called detonation and it is NOT good for your motor. Wild5.0, I would STRONGLY suggest that if you are having some pinging with a FRPP tune, DO NOT GET TUNED BY BAMA. There are VERY good tuners out there but you get what you pay for. Get a tune by LUND or AED, or MPT. Free tunes for life is crap and a marketing gimmick. If you get a good tune for your car, you are not going to be switching it up all of the time. We have had experience with multiple tuners and I will say from experience, pay a little more up front and get piece of mind and a great running car that wont blow up on you.
In the mean time, you could be using bad gas. Make sure you are running premium fuel at least 91 octane and 93 is even better. Get that tune OFF your car if it is pinging!

Thanks for the input guys. I am not happy about the ping, i have heard about AED. Anybody tune with them on a stock 5.0? This is my daily driver I want to make sure i get a safe tune while maximizing performance. As far as the gas, i have tried multiple gas stations with no difference, we only get 91 in cali which is another issue.

I'll be having AED tune my car when I get it. They're semi local to me though.

I can get 91 and 93 octane. I guess I am fortunate to have had zero pinging on either. I mostly use Shell as they are the only local gas available to me with the option for 93 octane.

What he said. Go to 76 and get 91. If you can't get to a 76, then go to Shell. Only 2 stations I trust my fuel from here in SoCal.

I'm not pushing any tune because I have Ford Procal tune however, you're getting pretty stupid saying don't get Bama. How many cars have they tuned that "blew up?" From what I can tell Bama, Steeda, AED, Lund all write good tunes for these cars. Also the free tune for life isn't a marketing gimmick...the point of it is they will give you a new tune if you need it because you added mods to the car. Seems pretty cool to me. Just my 2 cents.

just got the ford racing procal tune on today. runs perfect with some noticeable get up and go that wasn't there before. felt tires spin a bit without trying too hard after shift into 3rd, it didn't do that before. no pinging or other issues runs great.

Edit: I am running some Husky 94 octane with a half tank of co-op 91 and the tune is set for 91+. Cars love that Husky stuff. Both fuels are from refineries that are around 300 + km from where I am. Car loves the Husky stuff.

I couldn't find the link but I recall Ford racing having a procedure for if your tune pings.

I remember that too. OP, try searching this forum. I think there was a procedure for your Ford dealer to re-learn the crankshaft position sensor if memory serves.

Great info. Yeah there is a procedure to load the y parameter if it pings. But then i gotta take it to the ford dealer and have them do it so they honor the warranty. I am trying to find out about this crank re-learn see if that helps, but wont it void my warranty if i do it?

The free tunes for life applies to only that car. And guess what? All the big name tuners give free revisions as you add mods. So yes it is a gimmick that many uninformed fall for. Bama would be the absolute last tune I'd ever run on my car. Why? Because I've seen many data logs that scared the crap out of me. Some of which I've data logged for people myself.

I agree. When I had my 2006 GTO, I got it tuned at a few different shops before I settled. Any tuner I went to offered free tunes when you add more mods.

I'm currently looking for a good tuning company for my '11 GT, and Bama isn't even on my radar. They even offer a #8 warranty(which only lasts for your initial 3/36K warranty) because their tunes are a bit shoddy. Some of the data logs I've seen have been a little unsettling.
