Thinking of putting Boss 302 quad exhaust on my '14 GT, already have GT500 AB.

What do you think?

 

Same dilemma a year ago. Same situation. Decided to go full borla catback instead, and sold the gt500s. Never looked back since and the best exhaust decision I've made.

 

I have that exact setup and I love it!

 

Quads are a no-brainer

 

Sounds really good but the GT500 mufflers have the same issue to me as the stock mufflers, the big silver case hanging under the rear bumper looks terrible.

You can paint them black and make it look better though.

The only other issue to me is cost.

 

I agree. I have Boss quad setup (unrestricted) with Magnaflow Street Series axlebacks.

 

i plastic dipped them... now it looks ok. dip is holding up for last 4 months.

 

Waiting for pay day to pull the trigger on the Boss setup. Currently have Borla S-types. Neighbor's friend had his Boss over the other day with the plates pulled. Sold me right there.

 

GT500 AB and Boss quads on my car... just about perfection as far as Coyote exhaust note goes (IMO). GT500 mufflers were a bargain, Boss quads were expensive.

Sounds fantastic 100% of the time...not obnoxious at idle or cruising.

Not sure if the GT500s would even be necessary with the Boss Quads in place. I'd do the quad first and see if that is enough for you.

 

Haha, I did it the opposite. I put the GT500s on first hoping it would be enough but my buddy has the quads on his GT with stock exhaust and it sounds great. It can only sound better right?

I would assume you get no drone or any obnoxious side effects because they are all OEM parts. Is that true? The last thing I want is drone, that's kind of why I'm going the OEM route.

 

I put boss 302 pipes on with electric cut outs and left muffs stock. I can now dial in the sound as the mood strikes. Wide open when I want and back to stock for long drives. Sound good. A bit of a jake brake effect on engine braking, but some nice snap, crack pop before the engine brake effect kicks in.

 

I suspect you're right about this. The Quads are pricey but it's easy to imagine that an improperly developed set of pipes could rattle your brain at certain RPM. I never find drone to be a problem. If you're just cruising at low throttle settings, there's just the soft "thrum" of the exhaust, no harmonic resonance. IMO, it's perfect.

Yes. A car with GT500s will sound BETTER with the Quads. I suspect that 80% of the benefit between quads and GT500s come from the quads... but the GT500s will still let out a bit of extra sound and a very pleasing/muscle car tone. They compliment eachother well.

If someone was starting with a stock exhaust, I'd suggest seeing if the benefit of the Quads was enough and save the ~$300 for the GT500s. You can always add them later if you want a bit extra.

 

I would suspect that the BOSS pipes will supply plenty of interior resonance with the plates removed or with the holes greatly enlarged in the plates, just like many of the straight through muffler setups do.

The restrictor plates were never installed.

First year I had my '11, I did GT500 ABs. Loved every bit of it.

Last year I added the Boss quads and left the plates out. Fell harder in love with it from the first start up. Every chance I get to mash the throttle makes me feel a bit like Steve McQueen. There's something about the tonal quality and acoustics on these pipes... it's a distinct rumble and roar. Loud when you want it, quiet and composed when you need it.

I have the 05-10 quad and it's the same deal with the sound.

By looking at the diameter and shape of these pipes, you can tell, they were engineered in a way that other systems or one off shops that would never do or put the time or effort into engineering.

Because this is an OEM setup on the BOSS, you know they had a lot of work into it, compared to aftermarket suppliers.

Also...says a lot for how much work goes into the Mustang and how the engine and exhaust will sound.
They do a dynamite job on it.

I have this set up. I am VERY pleased with the sound and love the ability to adjust things with various restrictor plates. 3/4" restrictor plate sounds great and is still somewhat civilized around town.

 

I just put the boss pipes without restrictor plates on my 2012 Mustang, I had a Borla S-type cat back system which was just a bit to tame for me. Now the sound is excellent low and loud with zero drone and a steady purr at any cruising speed, reminds me of my flowmaster outlaws but without any drone

I kept the Borla over axel and had zero fitment issues in case anyone is wondering.
