Am I the only freak show that scrubs his AB before installing?

I am going to install my GT500 Axle-Backs tomorrow and I just opened the box. It was a ****ing mess. There were scratches and scuffs and red and gray marks everywhere. I suppose from the torch and solder (duh). So, I figured I'd either ***** to AM(I felt they were worse than usual) or clean them. So away I scrubbed for the past half hour. I cleaned them up pretty nice except for the nicks and scratches. I can't be the only OCD nutcase to do this. I'd almost like to be though, for OCD bragging rights...

I'd scuff them and paint them black before installing them, always hated the big silver mufflers hanging down under the back of the car.

Don't have that issue with my Outlaws though!

Do you have a shot of your finished product? I took a steel wool pad to my stock mufflers. It gave them a nice polished look and got rid of the dirt and rust. I follow up on my washes

Any way to give it a decent shine when new? One that lasts.

I just received my set! Took some steel wool to them and got rid of those weld burns. They look great! Install is tomorrow!

Not sure what you mean by weld burns, bit the discoloration from welding looks awesome IMO. Shows the work better and it looks cool.

To me that's unacceptable that Ford would try to sell that

I think this is normal for an OEM part, most OEM factory parts dont get the attention aftermarket parts do. As long as the tips are in good condition, I would not be worried about those little scratches.

You just mask off the pretty polished tips and spray everything else with flat black high temp paint. Modding 101 kids.

The stock mufflers look like they're made of stainless steel. If so, scrubbing with steel wool will cause them to rust! The wool disrupts the surface of the stainless and imbeds steel/iron particles which will rust and cause rusting of the base metal. You could use fine sandpaper or, better, a Scotch-Brite pad to clean them up. Just be sure the paper or pads were never previously used on steel or iron.
